Serhiy Kostjantynowytsch Wsechswjatskyj (* July 7 . Jul / 20th July  1905 greg. In Moscow , Russian Empire ; † 6. October 1984 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet astronomer and professor.

Life

Serhij Vsechswjatskyj studied physics and mathematics at the Lomonosov University in Moscow from 1922 to 1925 . Between 1924 and 1935 he worked there at the Institute for Astrophysics, which in 1931 became part of the newly created Sternberg Institute for Astronomy . From 1935 to 1939 he was an employee and deputy director of the Pulkovo Observatory in Leningrad . From 1939 to 1981 he was professor, founder and head of the Faculty of Astronomy at the University of Kiev .

His most important scientific papers dealt with the physics of comets, solar winds and solar activity, as well as problems with cosmogony . In 1960 he proposed the existence of Jupiter rings , which were actually discovered in 1979.

Vsechswjatskyj died in Kiev and was buried in the Baikowe cemetery .

Honors

In 2005 the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his portrait on the occasion of his 100th birthday . The asteroid of the main belt (2721) Vsekhsvyatskij , discovered by Nikolai Tschernych on September 22, 1973 , was named after him.
