The Wolodymyrska Street ( Ukrainian Володимирська вулиця Wolodymyrska wulyzja , Russian Владимирская улица Vladimirskaya Ulitsa ) is one of the oldest streets of Kiev and one of the main roads in the center of the Ukrainian capital.
location
The almost three kilometer long road begins in the Kiev upper town on the Andreassteig at the St. Andrew's Church and runs downhill from there in a south-westerly direction. After about 530 meters it leads past Sophienplatz with the Sophien Cathedral and the Bohdan-Khmelnyzkyj monument and from here runs parallel to Khreshchatyk, 550 meters to the east . After another 1,100 meters, it crosses Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and finally ends on Korolenkiwska Street ( Короленківська вулиця ) in Holosiyiv Raion .
history
After Vladimir the Holy named street bears its present name since 1901, but was from 1922 to 1944 after, living here for some time, writer Vladimir Korolenko in Korolenka Street renamed. The oldest street section, which leads from the Andreassteig to the Golden Gate, was built in the days of the Kievan Rus .
Development
On the street there are numerous representative buildings, monuments, museums, authorities and educational institutions such as the National Historical Museum of Ukraine (No. 2), the central building of the SBU (No. 33), the Syrotkyna apartment house (No. 39/24), the Golden Gate , the Taras Shevchenko Opera House (No. 50), the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (No. 54), the Central Na Rada (No. 57) with the "Museum of the Ukrainian People's Republic ", the Shevchenko Park and the Red Main Building of the Taras Shevchenko University opposite (No. 60). At the end of the street (number 101) is the building of the European Union Delegation for Ukraine .
