location

The square is located in Shevchenko Raion on Volodymyrska Street in central Kiev.

Name and development

The square has been named since 1869 after the St. Sophia Cathedral , whose south gate borders the square and whose bell tower towers over the square. In the meantime, from 1944 to 1993, the square was named after the hetman Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj , who was received here on December 23, 1648 after a successful campaign and whose monument is now on the square.
