The Raion Shevchenko (Ukrainian Шевченківський район / Shevchenkivskyi rayon , Russian Шевченковский район / Shevchenkovsky rayon ) is one of the ten city rajone the Ukrainian capital Kiev with 220,077 inhabitants (2020).

The area of ​​the Rajon is 27 km² and the population density is 8434 inhabitants per km². The name of the Rajon located in the center of Kiev was given in honor of the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko . The Rajon was founded in 1937, in 2001 the Rajons Radjansk and Staryj Kyiv were incorporated.

Streets, squares and sights

Kiev's capital boulevard, the Khreshchatyk , begins at the European Square , intersects the Maidan Nesaleschnosti and ends at Bessarabska Square , where the Taras Shevchenko Boulevard begins. At the end of it is Victory Square , behind which the boulevard continues as Victory Prospectus. Bohdan-Khmelnitsky Street , which is crossed by Wolodymyrska Street , also begins at Khreshchatyk . In addition to the sights in these places, there is also the Kiev TV tower , Babyn Yar , the Podhorskyj house and the Lukjanivska cemetery in the Rajon . In the Rajon is the St. Michael's Monastery , the Vladimir Cathedral , the Golden Gate of Kiev , the Kiev Zoo , the National Circus of Ukraine , the Taras Shevchenko Opera House and the St. Sophia Cathedral .
