Kiev television tower

The Kiev television tower ( Ukrainian Київська телевежа / Kyjiwska telewescha ) is a 385 meter high television tower for VHF and television . The Kiev TV tower was completed in 1973 and is the tallest free-standing steel lattice tower in the world. The four 100 m high supporting pillars are a special architectural feature. The shaft diameter is 4 m and consists of a steel framework construction of tubes with a wall thickness of 12 mm. Another special feature is the lack of rivets ; the entire steel structure was welded.

The tower was originally designed for the then Soviet capital Moscow . The Moscow authorities, however, preferred a more durable-looking structure and opted for the shape that can be seen today in the Ostankino TV tower . Kiev later needed its own transmission tower. The government commissioned the engineers to undertake the project, which was originally planned for Moscow, for Kiev with the stipulation that the height of the tower should be reduced by at least 30% so that it should not be as high as the Moscow tower.
