history
In the 18th century there was a cemetery of the Lutheran community of Kiev , a small lake and a stagecoach station in the place of today's square . At the end of the 18th century / beginning of the 19th century, a market was established here, where farmers from the Bessarabia region sold their goods, especially wine and fruit, and thus gave the square its name. In 1874 the square was renamed Bohdan-Khmelnyzkyj-Platz because the Bohdan-Kmelnyzkyj monument was to be erected here. After the monument was erected on Sophienplatz in 1888, the square got its old name again.
Bad hygienic conditions must have prevailed on the market at the end of the 19th century, so that one of the Kiev "sugar barons" bequeathed 500,000 rubles to the city for the construction of a market hall. The Warsaw architect Henrik Gai then built a 2500 m² market hall with a restaurant and hostel in the rational Art Nouveau style with elements of constructivism between 1910 and 1912 . The hall has a 15 m high glass roof and a facade decorated with reliefs with livestock and rural scenes. Today the hall is used by 360 stalls, shops and restaurants. A two-story entertainment complex and fast-food restaurants are located under the glass dome in front of the hall.
