The Bessarabska market hall ( Ukrainian Бессара́бський ринок Bessarabskyj rynok ) is a 2,896 m² market hall in the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
Surname
The name of the impressive round building comes from the Bessarabska Square of the same name on which it is located, which in turn got its name from the farmers from the Bessarabia region who traded wine and fruit here in the 19th century .
history
1904 the Kiev Sugar Baron, patron and donated philanthropist Lazar Brodsky (Ukr. Лазар Ізраїльович Бродський ) the city of 500,000 rubles to build a market hall, then from 1910 to 1912 according to plans of the Warsaw architect Henryk Julian Gay in rational Art Nouveau with elements of constructivism was built . The hall has a 15 m high glass roof and a facade decorated with reliefs with livestock and rural scenes.
The market hall has been a listed building as a monument to architecture and urban planning since 1979.
