The Bohdan Khmelnytskyi monument ( Ukrainian Пам'ятник Богданові Хмельницькому ) is an equestrian statue of the Cossack hetman Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj and a landmark of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
history
The monument with a total height of 10.85 meters was originally planned on Bessarabska Square on a pedestal with other sculptures, but this was discarded for lack of money. The bronze sculpture of the hetman was created by a donation from the Ukrainian sugar manufacturer Pavlo Charytonenko and the donation of the required bronze by the St. Petersburg Admiralty by the sculptor Michail Mikeschin . However, there was no money for the base, so the sculpture stood in the courtyard of a Kiev police station for eight years.
After the Kiev fortress administration provided granite blocks for the base, which were left over after the construction of the Nikolaus Chain Bridge , the architect Vladimir Nikolajew finally erected a base made of granite stones in the form of a kurgan on Sophienplatz , the statue was anchored on it and on Inaugurated on June 23, 1888, for the 900th anniversary of the Kievan Rus .
Today the monument is known throughout Ukraine and featured on many Ukrainian coins and stamps.
