The Kiev Fortress ( Ukrainian Київська фортеця / Kyjiwska fortezja ) is a former fortress in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . Today it houses a museum , a memorial as well as military and civil facilities.

history

Originally there was only a garrison hospital from 1755 in place of the fortress , but this was expanded into a hospital fortress in the course of the fortress expansion from 1836 to 1850. The arched building was erected between 1839 and 1841 and served as a school for military medical training. After the fortress lost its strategic importance at the end of the 19th century, it continued to be used by the military (headquarters, warehouses, barracks, prison).

A memorial today commemorates the rebels and Polish officers imprisoned and shot here after the January uprising in 1863 was put down.

The museum was founded in 1927 as a branch of the Museum of the History of Kiev. Since 1991 it has been the “Kiev Fortress” Museum, with 17,000 exhibits, as a “Historical and Architectural Monument”.
