Landmark
A landmark is a typical feature or identification symbol that characterizes geographical objects, especially inhabited places and cities . This primarily includes striking buildings , but also natural features such as landmarks . Another distinguishing mark for cities are city originals . “Landmark” is not an official title.
The town's landmarks played a major role in the history of handicrafts , as the wandering journeymen had to prove their stay in other cities by knowing the landmarks (back then often: curiosities of a town).
Until the 17th century, the emblem (from ahd. Wortzeihhan , word mark in the sense of “slogan”, “identification mark”) was a sign that was supposed to attract attention. With the addition of word / true it was reinterpreted in today's understanding.
