Original (person)
An original is a person who has become known through a distinctive, sometimes eccentric appearance, behavior or other characteristics. The factors that manifest a deviation from the general public , a moment of surprise , something strange and whimsical, play a role here.
term
The Brockhaus- Bilder-Conversations-Lexikon described the term original in 1839, among other things:
“People are also called originals if they deviate from the ordinary in a peculiar and striking way through the originality of their way of thinking or their behavior; but this can just as well be done through strangeness and folly as through noble and excellent qualities. "
Adelung's Grammatical-Critical Dictionary of High German Dialect defined the term original in 1798 as follows:
“In figurative terms, one also calls an extraordinary genius, a person who in his way is a self-inventor, an original; because then, in a wider sense, a strange head, an eccentric, gets the name of an original, namely the folly, the strange. "
The local notoriety earlier originals is local history strongly linked to the exchange of information over time. Most of the protagonists were based on true events and biographies , but they have often been falsified by oral tradition in the form of legends . There were anecdotes about some originals in which, in addition to the real or fictitious characteristics and experiences of the person, there are also traits that could be regarded as typical of their homeland . Some of the fates of local people were also thematized in poems, stories and plays. Sometimes the tragic traits such as poverty, alcoholism or other illnesses are ignored and the life story is portrayed in a rather glamorous way.
Only the availability of the media, especially the local press , made it possible for contemporary people and events to be better known. A local personality could so with corresponding Popularity also to nationally known identification and symbolic figure, and thus become part of the local color to their hometown, such as the Hamburg Hans Hummel . Therefore, some monuments were erected in their honor .
