Lennet Kann (actually Leonard van Kann , * 1844 in Aachen ; † January 5, 1916 there ) was an Aachen city original and is still an important traditional figure in the city.

Life

Lennet Kann grew up in poor conditions and from childhood was used to making a living by begging . This is how he survived after both his parents and sister died early.

His unusual height, which was emphasized by his thinness, made Kann a striking person. In the course of time he became a well-known figure in the city, especially among the students , who often invited him, made harmless jokes with him and richly decorated him with carnival medals, which he wore with pride. In addition, Kann was present at many events, especially funerals, where he was hoping to be fed.

As Kann suffered from gout with advancing age , his appearance became even more distinctive, as he leaned forward in an idiosyncratic manner with stiff, short steps, but kept his chest upright so that his numerous medals could be shown to advantage.

Afterlife

Lennet Kann is still present in Aachen traditions today. He is one of the symbolic figures of the Aachen Carnival as well as the order against the seriousness of animals and was immortalized in the famous Aachen carnival song Dat es der Lennet Kann , which is sung to the melody of the Our Guard military march by Rudolf Förster (1860-1894). Since the end of 2010 there has been a top-fermented Aachen beer called Lennet.
