Waluliso in the Inner City, Vienna (1982)

Ludwig "Wickerl" Anton Waluliso b. Weinberger (born July 2, 1914 in Vienna ; † July 21, 1996 ibid.) Was a Viennese city original and environmental and peace activist.

Life

Waluliso was born into a poor family, learned the bookbinding trade and worked as an independent sales representative for advertising materials and stamps . In the 1970s he successfully collected signatures for the preservation of Vienna's Danube Island as a local recreation area , and in the 1980s he demonstrated for disarmament and peace . With his motto "water, air, light and sun" (he created his pseudonym from the first two letters ) and his idiosyncratic clothing, which consisted of a white toga , a forehead wreath made of olive branches , a shepherd's staff and an apple, he became a Viennese original that gave regular speeches to the population in downtown Vienna on Stephansplatz or on Vienna's Naschmarkt , in which he saw God and nature as one in a haunting manner and referred to visions. He was a staunch nudist and often appeared in public wearing just an apron in the summer. Weinberger had his surname officially changed to Waluliso in 1986.

From 1944 Weinberger lived on Wehrgasse in Vienna-Margareten on just nine square meters. When he last appeared in public on Kärntner Strasse in Vienna , he distributed money with the remark: “Character counts and not money. Politicians are speculators. "

Waluliso's tomb

His grave is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 30E, row 1, number 27). The grave design was designed by Waluliso himself.

The Waluliso Bridge over the New Danube

On June 7, 1998, the Waluliso Bridge (also: Waluliso Bridge ), a pontoon bridge , was opened as a foot and bike bridge over the New Danube near the Freudenau power station in his honor . This was in response to a long-standing wish of Waluliso  to create a connection from the Danube Island over the New Danube to Hubertusdamm on the north bank in the area of the nudist area - the so-called Hirscheninsel .
