The Hungerburgbahn is a funicular that opened on December 1st, 2007 in the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck , the stations were built according to the plans of the architect Zaha Hadid .

The Hungerburgbahn connects the city ​​center with the Hungerburg on the mountainside north of the Inn and replaced the old Hungerburgbahn from 1906 . This was steeper, almost in a straight line and almost exactly 1 km less from the right, southern bank of the Inn. The new Hungerburgbahn from 2007, on the other hand, runs after crossing the Inn along the southern bank of the Inn and then further towards the city center to the Kongresshaus. Only for the last 100 meters do the old and new lifts use the same route to the same mountain station, which is still reminiscent of the steel Inn bridge and high up a concrete viaduct of the old lift.

The new Hungerburgbahn is one of the city's landmarks, two sections run underground in tunnels, it is single-track with a central turnout and, at 1,440 mm, slightly wider than the standard gauge.

A new construction of the railway has been discussed since the 1940s. At that time the Gauleiter Hofer sought to remove the "disturbing" circular painting and the steel bridge of the Hungerburgbahn .

In 1985 City Council Knoll advertised the underground funicular, popularly known as "Knollmetro", directly from Saggen to Seegrube . Other projects followed - such as B. the "Golden Line", a kind of rail-bound orbit run by a Zillertal cable car company. However, this and other projects under consideration were highly controversial among the population, as no demonstrable improvement in transport links could be achieved.

After two years of construction, the new Hungerburgbahn was put into operation in December 2007 with an underground terminus near the old town near the congress center and a partially underground route under a through road and in the mountainside. The renowned architect Zaha Hadid , who had already planned the Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck , was able to win a competition with her project. The project was financed and implemented as a public private partnership between the city of Innsbruck, STRABAG and Leitner AG . The company operates the railway for a limited period of time. After that, the systems will revert to the city.

The route begins underground at the Congress station at the eastern end of the Kongresshaus, follows Europaratsallee and Rennweg in a 371.5 m long tunnel and comes to the surface again at the Löwenhaus intermediate station . After crossing the Inn over a 242 m long S-shaped steel cable-stayed bridge with two pylons, the route leads a little way along the St. Nikolauser Innufer above ground and then flows into the 445 m long Weiherburg tunnel , in which the middle of the route and thus the siding is located . From the Alpenzoo intermediate station , the route leads above ground on a 462 m long reinforced concrete bridge and joins the old route shortly before the mountain station.

A special feature of the new Hungerburgbahn, although it does not reach the maximum gradient of the predecessor, is the strongly changing longitudinal slope both during the course of the route and at the various stops. For this reason, Leitner Technologies designed an inclination device with a stepper motor, which is adjusted via the copier , for the two funicular vehicles. These each consist of five passenger compartments suspended in a common frame. The active adjustment of the inclination allows standing in and getting in and out of horizontal compartments at the breakpoints and thus breakpoints both on the level and on the slope of the mountain slope. With the two vehicles, each with a capacity of 130 people, a transport capacity of 1,200 people per hour and direction is achieved.

The railway is mainly used for tourism, as it has little traffic use in city traffic. The main hope is for income from congress tourism. Therefore, the web forms with convention center, parking garages and bus parking in the area of Social and Economic Sciences of the University of Innsbruck an organizational unit while important rail public transport axes of the city about half a kilometer away - the direct connection to the Congress station is only given by an inner-city bus route.

The railway should also serve the public transport between the city and Hungerburg. However, the connection is remote both in the city and on the Hungerburg itself, as the railway runs between 500 m and 1 km east of the residential areas on the slope of the Hungerburg and is separated from these, as well as from the Alpine zoo , by the fragmented topography . The city of Innsbruck finances additional off-peak hours and enables use with normal transport association core zone tickets (monthly, half-yearly and annual tickets).

Citizen Protests

The implementation of the new building project on the part of the city management had been massively criticized by citizens' initiatives and the city opposition until recently - the demand for a referendum on the future of the Hungerburg Railway was not met. The formerly listed railway was to be preserved as a landmark of the city of Innsbruck a few weeks before its hundredth birthday and its demolition prevented at the last minute. In addition, there was criticism of the planned de facto privatization of the railway as part of the new building project and the associated fear that fares could rise significantly. So the groundbreaking for the new railway project had to be carried out under police protection.

December 8, 2005 was set as the last day of operation of the old Hungerburgbahn at short notice and without prior notice. Farewell parties or notices to the public about the end of operations were forbidden to the staff.

Like its predecessor, the new Hungerburgbahn has two passenger cabins that meet in the middle of the route. Car no. 1 is painted yellow with silver straps, car no. 2 is painted blue with silver straps.
