Axamer Lizum mountain chapel

Mountain chapel

In May 1962 the building association Bergkapelle Axams Lizum was founded. He organized the construction of a chapel in the Axamer Lizum on a voluntary basis with a view to the Olympic Winter Games in 1964. The property was made available free of charge by the landowners. Horst Parson took over the planning and construction management of the chapel . The construction took place in 1963 mainly with materials from the area as well as Axam companies and construction workers. The construction costs of around 500,000 Austrian Schillings were covered by various donations, grants and a loan. On December 20, 1963, Alois Stöger consecrated the completed chapel. To mark the 25th anniversary of the chapel, a bell was purchased from the Grassmayr bell foundry .

The Axamer Lizum ski area was built on the occasion of the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 ( Olympic hotel , former sports accommodation, built by Erwin Klein ) and expanded for the 1976 Games , including a funicular to 2340  m above sea level. A. high Hoadl ( Olympic track ). It now includes the comb Pleisen-Hoadl in the West ( Salfeinskamm , for Grinzener Sendersbachtal without runway departure), as well as the areas around the Birgitzköpfl ( 1982  m above sea level. A. ) and the rearmost Geroldsbachtal below the Saile ( Nockspitze , 2404  m above sea level. A. ).

Since 1997 there has been a snow-making system with a reservoir "Lizum Tal"; In 2017 a new pond "Dohlennest" with a volume of 255,000 m³ was built.

In analogy to the “golden” roof , the ski area is also called the “white roof of Innsbruck”. The Freestyle Park Golden Roofpark on Schönboden also got its name from this. The Axamer Lizum is the largest ski area in the vicinity of Innsbruck . If the snow conditions are good, it is possible to ski down to the towns of Axams, Götzens or Mutters, with the slopes to Götzens and Mutters being artificially snowed through the re-establishment of the Muttereralmbahn ski area and thus accessible for most of the winter season (connection via the Birgitzköpflhütte ). The return trip takes the ski bus from the valley station in Mutters or Götzens.

Merger with the Muttereralmbahn

A direct chairlift ( Birgitzbahn , 4-seater high-speed railway detachable) over the Birgitzköpfl was planned for a while after long negotiations [out of date] , but is not in concrete planning (as of February 2017).

According to the Annual Report 2017 of the Tourism Association Innsbruck tourism were "discussions [...] stopped in August because the proposed variant was strictly rejected by the Axamer Lizum, now the project is on hold."

Merger with Schlick 2000

In the years 2009–2015, a merger of the ski area with Schlick 2000 was heatedly and controversially discussed. The project was developed under the title Building bridges . Because the lift to be built led through the Kalkkögel quiet area , the project was heavily criticized by various institutions such as the Austrian Alpine Association , the Friends of Nature .

In 2014 the Kalkkögel was formed under Rescue! a petition against the merger, which was supported by 20 associations or other institutions. Over 33,000 signatures were collected. In the meantime, a referendum on this topic has been considered. A study, according to which only larger ski areas in the greater Innsbruck area have a chance of survival, confirmed the proponents. In March 2015, the Tyrolean state government announced that the project could not be legally implemented. The project applicants announced that they would not give up the project.

Toboggan runs

An illuminated toboggan run leads from the valley station of the lifts through the Axamer Valley to Axams. In 2008, another toboggan run Pleisenhütte - Axamer Lizum was opened.
