The Patscherkofel from the Höttinger Graben |
The Patscherkofel is 2246 m above sea level. A. high summit of the Tux Alps . Its location a few kilometers south of the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck makes it the local mountain of the city.
Located in the municipality of Patsch at the north-eastern entrance of the Wipptal to the Brenner Pass , the Patscherkofel with its round, unwooded summit is probably the most striking elevation in the south of Innsbruck. The Patscherkofel transmitter is located on the mountain .
landscape
The Patscherkofel-Zirmberg conservation area is part of the Tux Pre-Alps and is located immediately south of Innsbruck. The Patscherkofel and the mountain range that continues to the east offer good views both to the north over the Inn Valley and the Nordkette and to the south into the central part of the Alps .
The neighboring peaks of the Patscherkofel are the Viggarspitze ( 2306 m ) and the Neunerspitze ( 2285 m ). The northern slope of the protected area descends gently towards the Inn Valley , while the southern side slopes down to the Viggartal with steep, wooded slopes. The mountain range of the Patscherkofel with its forest-free knoll is visible from afar and demonstrates the alpine tree line in an exemplary way.
On the aerodynamically favorably shaped, forest-free hilltop, as on the similarly shaped Brocken , enormous wind speeds are measured again and again, especially with a foehn . It was 177 km / h on December 25, 2013 and 164 km / h on February 11, 2014, and 176 km / h on December 11, 2017. The measured values from the ZAMG weather station there are permanently available on the Internet.
The "Zirmberg", an old name for the entire Patscherkofel- Glungezer area, which is made up of dense stone pine forests , was designated as a nature reserve as early as 1942 . In addition to the extensive virgin stone pine forests, large stands of pines and rubble fields, this area has a very pristine high mountain landscape with rock towers and pre-Ice Age valley remains.

geology
The northern slope of the Patscherkofel is formed from the rocks of the Innsbruck quartz phyllite complex up to a height of about 1800 meters . These are low-grade metamorphic rocks from the Paleozoic period, especially from the Silurian . Tectonically they are assigned to the Lower Eastern Alps . The summit and the southern part of the Patscherkofel, on the other hand, are made up of rocks from the Patscherkofel - Glungezerkristalline , which tectonically belongs to a higher unit, the Middle Eastern Alps. The area of the summit and just north of it is mainly formed from mica schist , while on the steep slopes to the south and southeast mainly gneiss occurs.
In recent geological times, the north and west sides of the Patscherkofel have been influenced by strong fault and fracture tectonics. The summit of the Grünbichl north of the Patscherkofel is “nothing more than a piece of sagging Patscherkofel”.
Tourism and sport
The Patscherkofel has been connected to Igls by the Patscherkofelbahn , a cable car , since 1928 . You can also take tram line 6 or bus line J from Innsbruck to the valley station of the cable car. The Zirbenweg leads to the east through one of the largest and oldest stone pine stands in Europe. Right next to the mountain station of the Patscherkofelbahn is the Patscherkofelhaus of the Austrian Alpine Club , built in 1887 . In 2015, the Innsbruck municipal council decided to completely rebuild the cable car; the new 10- seater gondola - single-cable gondola has been in operation since December 2017.
The highest botanical garden in Austria - the Patscherkofel Alpine Garden - is five minutes from the mountain station. The two hectare area is home to 400 different plant species, many of which are under strict nature protection .
During the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and 1976 , the alpine downhill runs took place on the Patscherkofel as well as the bobsleigh and toboggan competitions in the Igls ice channel (at its foot).
