history

Bobsleigh World Cup 2011 in Innsbruck-Igls

As early as 1935, the world championships went to Innsbruck-Igls for the first time. At that time the route ran from Römerstraße to the valley station of the Patscherkofelbahn . Because of several accidents in the target curve, the track was closed many years later. When the Olympic Winter Games were awarded to Innsbruck in 1964 , the construction of the Olympic bobsleigh run Igls began in 1962. Two separate artificial ice rinks made of concrete were built below the Patscherkofel. The bobsled run was 1506 m long and had 13 curves.

In 1974, an artificial ice rink was built for the 1976 Winter Olympics . The groundbreaking took place on March 29, 1974 by Minister of Education Fred Sinowatz . This facility was expanded several times in the following years. In 1981, next to the Bobcafé, the run was extended by another curve. The new women's start was moved to the fifth corner in the 1990/91 season. In 1993 the bobsleigh world championship was organized . In 1998, the extension of the finish line was completed. The general renovation of the concrete pipe was completed in 2004.

Since 2004, Igls has hosted the Wok World Championships several times .
