Career

Martins Dukurs made his debut in Winterberg in December 2000 as 34th in the Skeleton World Cup . The following January he also started for the first time at the Skeleton World Championships . In Calgary he was 28. In the 2001/02 season he started in the newly created European Cup . The first outstanding performance in the World Cup he achieved in tenth in January 2005 in the pre-Olympic race in Turin . At the 2006 Winter Olympics , he then reached seventh place. At the European Championships of the year he was eighth. In the 2006/07 season, Martins Dukurs joined the SRTS Race Team Skeleton and made the final breakthrough in the same season. At the World Championships in St. Moritz he finished sixth, at the European Championships in Königssee fourth behind his brother Tomass Dukurs and third at the penultimate World Cup race of the season in Winterberg. In the 2009/10 season he won four World Cup races, finished in the top five in every race and won the overall standings for the World Cup season. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Martins Dukurs won the silver medal behind the Canadian Jon Montgomery . After three of four rounds he was still in the lead, but then slipped back to second place in the last and decisive run.

In the post-Olympic season he won the first title to be awarded at the 2011 European Skeleton Championships in Winterberg. In the World Cup , he achieved seven podium finishes in eight races, including five wins. He won the overall World Cup standings with ease. The strong season was crowned by winning the gold medal at the 2011 World Championships in Königssee . He drove the best time in all four rounds. With victories at the 2012 World Championships and the World Cup , Dukurs became the first skeleton to win both titles two years in a row. In January 2013 he won the European Skeleton Championship 2013 for the fourth time and at the World Championship he won silver behind Alexander Tretyakov . In the World Cup he only had to admit defeat to Frank Rommel in one race and won the overall World Cup again. In 2014 he became European champion again and won the overall World Cup for the fifth time after not being on the podium in just one race. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , however, he could not prevail against Alexander Tretyakov and again won the silver medal. In winter 2014/15 he defended his European title again and won the overall world cup for the sixth time in a row . He also won the world title for the third time. In the 2015/16 World Cup , he won seven of the eight races and took the overall World Cup again. Only in the seventh race of the season he had to admit defeat to Yun Sung-bin .
