Andy Schmid is a former Austrian skeleton rider .

Andy Schmid was one of the most successful skeleton pilots of the 1980s. Together with the Swiss Nico Baracchi , he dominated the European skeleton championships between 1984 and 1988 . 1984 in Winterberg , 1985 in Sarajevo and 1986 in St. Moritz as well as 1988 in Winterberg behind Alain Wicki , he won the European runner-up title. He could only win it once, in 1987 in Sarajevo.

At world championships he won silver behind Michael Grünberger in Königssee in 1990 and behind Christian Auer in 1991 in Igls . In 1993 in La Plagne he won the world title and was second again in Altenberg in 1994 , this time behind Gregor Stähli .

Schmid went down in skeleton history as the first overall World Cup winner in the skeleton in the 1986/87 season. In the following season he won two of the three races and was again overall World Cup winner. In the 1988/89 season he was third in the overall World Cup. In 1990/91 he repeated this third place. In 1992 he won another World Cup race in St.Moritz, also in 1994. With second place in the overall World Cup behind Christian Auer , he ended his career after the 1993/94 season. After his active career, he was the coach of the Austrian skeleton pilots.
