Bruce Sandford

Bruce Richard Sandford (born July 18, 1962 in Hamilton ) is a retired New Zealand skeleton driver . He started playing skeleton in 1989.

Sandford's greatest success was winning the Skeleton World Championship in Calgary in 1992 , where he was able to leave Swiss Gregor Stähli and Austrian Christian Auer , world champion of the previous year, behind. He was the first world champion in this sport who did not come from Austria or Switzerland. A year earlier he had finished sixth at the World Championships in Igls . In three other World Cup participations, he did not make it into the top ten. He started in the World Cup between 1990 and 2000. His best placement in 1990 was fourth in Cervinia . His best placement in the overall World Cup was sixth place in the 1990/91 season.

Sandford's nephew Ben Sandford is also a world-class skeleton pilot.
