Christopher Grotheer at the German Skeleton Championships 2018/19 in Altenberg

Christopher Grotheer lives in Wernigerode and began playing skeleton in 2007. After the first races at national level since 2008, the 2010/11 season saw the debut in the European Skeleton Cup . In Igls , he was 14th and 15th in his first two races in November 2010. In his third race in Winterberg , he just missed the podium in his first result in the top ten in fourth place, as was the podium a week later in the following race in Altenberg . One day later he reached the podium for the first time and in second place only had to admit defeat to the dominant driver of the season, Christian Baude . After another fourth place in the last race of the season, he finished eighth in the overall standings. In the winter of 2011/12 he started in the Intercontinental Cup , where he achieved placings between 4th and 9th place in the first four races. He then returned to the European Cup and finished second twice in the last two races of the season in Winterberg. At the junior world championships at the end of the season he won the silver medal behind Axel Jungk and ahead of David Lingmann .

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he won bronze at the German championships . In November 2012 , Christopher Grotheer made his debut in the World Cup . He took part in a total of eight of the nine races of the season and was in the top ten five times. In the fourth race of the season in Winterberg, he was even able to take third place on the podium. He then became Junior World Champion in Igls in December 2012, ahead of Axel Jungk and Barrett Martineau . At the European Championships , he finished sixth; in the overall World Cup ranking he was eighth. At his first world championship in the senior division, he reached 16th place. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Grotheer started in the Intercontinental Cup . He finished the first four races with a win, two second places and a fourth place and was then used again in the World Cup , where he was only able to achieve 15th, 12th and 23rd place and lost his starting place to Alexander Gassner . At the Junior World Championships in 2014 he won silver behind Kilian von Schleinitz and in front of Raphael Maier . For the winter of 2014/15, Grotheer was able to qualify again for the German World Cup squad. During the season he finished in the top five three times in the World Cup and was eighth in the overall standings. In January 2015 he won the bronze medal again at the German Championships in Winterberg. At the Junior World Championship in Altenberg, he was able to win the title at the same time as Nikita Tregubow . At the Skeleton World Championship in 2015 he won silver with Team Germany II and was the best German fifth in the individual. At the end of 2015 he won the silver medal behind Axel Jungk at the German championships .

At the World Cup in Altenberg 2017, Grotheer was the winner with a track record.

In the winter of 2019/20, Grotheer did not contest a single World Cup race, but instead started in the Intercontinental Cup series, the overall ranking of which he won. For this reason, winning his first world title at the Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships 2020 in Altenberg was considered a big surprise.
