Christian Auer

Christian Auer (born April 4, 1966 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian skeleton driver .

Christian Auer is one of the most successful skeleton athletes ever. At the World Championships in 1989 in St. Moritz , he won silver behind Alain Wicki . In 1991 he became world champion in Igls , and third in Calgary the following year . In 1995 another silver medal was added, which he won behind Jürg Wenger in Lillehammer. In 1996 he won his last World Cup medal in Calgary with bronze. Between 1989 and 2001 Auer competed in nine world championships. At his last start in Calgary he finished in a good fifth place. Apart from a 19th place in 1997 in Lake Placid, he was always able to place in the top seven. At the European Championships he won silver in Sarajevo in 1987 and was only defeated by Andy Schmid .

Auer was particularly successful in the Skeleton World Cup, which he dominated between 1990 and 1995 and, apart from 1993, where he was second only to Franz Plangger , he won five times. He was also able to win nine individual races, the first in 1990 in Cervinia , the last in 1996 in Lake Placid . The final conclusion of Auer's career was the 2002 Winter Olympics , where skeleton was back in the Olympic program for the first time since 1948. Auer's ability to perform was not enough for a place at the very front, he finished twelfth. After his career he became the Austrian national coach.
