Yun Sung-bin (born May 23, 1994 in Jinju , Gyeongsangnam-do ) is a South Korean skeleton pilot .

Career

Yun Sung-bin started skeleton in 2011 and has been a member of the South Korean national team since 2012. He lives in Seoul and is trained by Cho In-ho . In November 2012, he made his debut in the North American Cup . He climbed from 23rd place in his first two starts in Park City continuously during the season to 4th place in the last race in Lake Placid and finished ninth in the overall standings. The following season he was again in the North American Cup and achieved his first podium finishes with two third places and one second place in Park City. As a result, he started in the Intercontinental Cup and already finished second in the first two races in Igls . In January 2014, he celebrated his first win in Whistler before finishing second twice in Park City. He was fourth in the overall classification of the North American Cup and fifth in the Intercontinental Cup, although he did not complete all races of the season in either of the two series. In the 2014 Olympic Games of Sochi , he finished 16th Place.

In the 2014/15 season, Yun Sung-bin started in the World Cup for the first time . After he was disqualified in the first race of the season in Lake Placid, he was able to drive to third place in Calgary . In January 2015 he finished second at the World Cup in St. Moritz and in February at the World Cup final in Sochi again third. He finished sixth in the overall World Cup. Yun finished eighth at the 2015 Skeleton World Championship in Winterberg . In the 2015/16 World Cup he achieved further podium places with second places in Lake Placid, Park City and Königssee and third places in Königssee and Whistler. In St. Moritz, he became the first Korean to win a skeleton World Cup race, which was his only defeat of the season for Martins Dukurs . Two weeks later, he and Alexander Tretyakov won the silver medal behind Martins Dukurs at the World Championships in Igls . In the overall World Cup he also finished second behind Martins Dukurs.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 World Cup winter , Yun won again in Whistler and came third in Lake Placid.

In the 2017/18 season , Yun had the breakthrough in which he was able to claim the overall World Cup with five World Cup victories.

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he won the gold medal with a lead of 1.63 seconds.
