Kristan Bromley (born March 7, 1972 in Rossendale ) is a former British skeleton rider . He is a three-time European and once world champion and overall winner of the Skeleton World Cup . He had his most successful year in 2008, when he was able to win all three titles.

Kristan Bromley, also known in the UK media as Dr. Ice is a graduate engineer from the University of Nottingham . His dissertation is entitled Factors affecting the performance of skeleton bobsleds and thus also relates to his sporting life. He works as an assistant at the University of Bath and runs a company that deals with ice sports. Prior to that, he had worked at British Aerospace on composites for the Eurofighter, among other things, but then became increasingly interested in the scientific analysis of the physical and aerodynamic phenomena that occur in skeleton sports. In the course of the attempts to optimize the sled aerodynamics, he initially jumped on the sled as his own test pilot and then increasingly took part in competitions.

Bromley made his debut in early 1996 at a World Cup race in Winterberg (28th). A year later he was able to finish in the top ten for the first time in eighth place in La Plagne . He celebrated his first victory in Calgary in late 1999 . He finished the 1997/98 season fifth in the overall World Cup, third in 1999/2000, sixth in 2002/03 and in 2003/04 he won the overall standings and won three of the six races of the season. In 2005/06 he was again fifth. After a somewhat weaker 2006/07 season , he again won the overall ranking of the World Cup in 2007/08 .

1997 started Bromley for the first time at world championships. In the world championships in Lake Placid he was ninth. A year later, Bromley was fifth in Lake Placid and fourth in Altenberg in 1999 . So far he has only won a medal at European championships. In both 2004 and 2005 Bromley won the European Championship title in Altenberg. In 2002 the Briton took part in the skeleton competition, which was included in the Olympic program for the first time since 1948, and went into the race as one of the favorites. However, after he finished the first run only 19th due to a mistake, even the fifth-fastest time in the second run did not help for a significant improvement and Bromley was at the end of 13th. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Bromley took 5th place, 6th place at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver . At the 2008 World Championships in Altenberg , Bromley was able to win his only world championship medal to date with the gold medal. Other good placings were a fourth place at the 1999 World Cup and a sixth place at the 2011 World Cup .

From 1997 to 1999 Bromley won three British championship titles in a row. In 2001 he was third, in 2002 second behind AJ Collins , in 2003 behind Steve Anson . In 2004 and 2005 he won the title again, making him the current British record champion. In 2008 he won the triple of the World and European Championships as well as the overall World Cup. He was only the second pilot after Andy Schmid , who did this in 1987.

Bromley lives in Bath and was trained by Richard Bromley. He is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right to Play .

Bromley is in a relationship with Shelley Rudman , with whom he has two daughters. In September 2015, he announced the end of his career after taking a break from the preseason.
