Whistler , actually Resort Municipality of Whistler , is a place in the Whistler-Blackcomb region , a renowned ski resort in western Canada , about 115 km northeast of Vancouver in British Columbia . The region is named after the two mountains Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Peak .

history

The Whistler Valley is a traditional Squamish and Lil'wat trade route . The first British visitors called the area London Mountain , but the name after the whistle of the marmot prevailed. Completed in 1877, a path briefly linked Lillooet, Pemberton and Burrard Inlet over a pass from Squamish to the Seymour River.

Trappers and prospectors like John Millar and Henry Horstman, who set up small camps, were drawn to the natural beauty of the area. With the arrival of Mrytle and Alex Philip from Maine and Vancouver, respectively, who purchased four hectares of land on Alta Lake in 1914, the first lodge ( Rainbow Lodge ) was created. They benefited from the fact that the Pacific Great Eastern Railway was completed that same year , which drastically reduced the travel time. The lodge was not the only one, others followed suit. Although four sawmills processed enormous amounts of wood, almost all infrastructure was missing until the 1960s.

It was not until 1962 that attempts to turn the area into a ski area began - in 1966 the first lifts went into operation, which resulted in the application for the 1968 Winter Olympics .

Demographics

The 2011 census showed a population of 9,824 residents for the small town. The population increased by 6.2% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the entire province of British Columbia grew by 7.0% at the same time.

politics

The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on September 6, 1976 ( incorporated as a Resort Municipality ).

The township mayor is Jack Crompton. Together with six other citizens, it forms the council of the small town (council).

Sports

Whistler is a popular winter sports destination because of its guaranteed snow. There are numerous runs of various difficulty levels on both mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb. Whistler-Blackcomb is the largest ski area in North America.

Announcement Whistler 2010

The snowboard world championships took place here in early 2005 . One of the largest bike parks in the world operates in summer . Whistler was again included in the World Cup calendar for the 2007/2008 Alpine ski season , with competitions for women and men taking place in February 2008. The Alpine skiing competitions were held in Whistler as part of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Whistler is also a preferred area for many sports film shoots, particularly in the snowboard and downhill sports . The film Seven Sunny Days was shot for the most part on site and had its world premiere at Skiers Plaza .

Since 2013, a long-distance triathlon (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) has been held here every July with Ironman Canada .

traffic

Whistler is located on British Columbia Highway 99 , which connects the town to the south after about 50 kilometers with Squamish and after about 125 kilometers with Vancouver.

Individual Whistler Mountaineer trains run from Whistler Station to North Vancouver . Scheduled passenger traffic has not existed for years. Train connections to Jasper are offered by Rocky Mountaineer , who use the Canadian National Railway from North Vancouver via Whistler and Prince George . Bus services are provided by the Whistler and Valley Express buses, which run to Squamish and Pemberton .

North of Whistler is the Whistler / Green Lake Water Aerodrome ( ICAO code CAE5), a seaplane airport that connects Whistler with several cities in the province. Most Whistler residents use Vancouver International Airport in Vancouver, 125 km away.
