Whistler Mountain is a mountain in the Fitzsimmons Range in the northwest corner of Garibaldi Provincial Park in British Columbia , Canada . Its height is 2181 m .
The mountain was originally named London Mountain after a mining area nearby. In 1965 the mountain was renamed because the association with London weather was not conducive to tourism. The name Whistler was chosen because of the native marmots and their characteristic whistling.
At the end of the 1960s, the mountain with the adjacent Blackcomb Peak was expanded into a ski area. Whistler , at the foot of the mountains, is one of the most popular winter sports locations. During the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Whistler and the neighboring Blackcomb hosted the alpine skiing competitions.
