From 1983 to 1985, initially as the "Canadian Ultra Distance Triathlon" in Penticton , this competition became the third qualifying competition outside the USA (after Auckland and Lake Biwa ) for the Ironman Hawaii in 1986 . The track was considered to be one of the most beautiful of all official Ironman qualification races; in the 2000s, all starting places were allocated on site on the day after the event, so that there was no possibility of online registration.

The organizer of the triathlon has been the Canadian Graham Fraser with his company North American Sports (NA Sports) since 1996, and for the use of the Ironman trademark he paid royalties to its rights holder WTC . After the WTC was taken over by a private equity company in 2008, Fraser sold the US part of North American Sports (NA Sports) to the WTC in early 2009 . In May 2012, Fraser also sold Ironman Canada to the WTC, whereby his contract with the city of Penticton provided for a special right of termination in the event of a sale to a third party. After a series of presentations by the WTC and the Challenge Family , the city of Penticton decided not to continue the contract with NA Sports with the WTC. As a partner of Challenge Roth , the event has continued to be held under the name Challenge Penticton since 2013 .
After the cancellation by the city of Penticton, the WTC initiated a displacement competition in which it set up a new competition - this time organized itself - in Whistler , around 500 km away, in the second largest country in the world . In the meantime even an alignment 60 km north of Penticton was under discussion. The new venue Whistler, which was used at the 2010 Winter Olympics a . a. The venue for the alpine skiing , cross-country skiing , biathlon and ski jumping competitions required a complete re-planning of the competition routes and infrastructure as well as the recruitment of volunteers , who numbered around 4,000 in Penticton, but this was an advantage for the athletes outside the region to be closer to Vancouver International Airport , which has more traffic than the airport near Penticton.

While WTC Fraser only made 50 qualification places available for the Ironman Hawaii for Penticton in 2012, it then offered 100 qualification places in Whistler in 2013. In mid-August 2012, the date of the event and the prize money of US $ 61,500 for 2013 for the Challenge Penticton were announced. Six weeks later, the WTC announced that it would host its new event in Whistler on the exact same date in 2013, as well as increasing the prize money from the previous USD 25,000 in Penticton to USD 75,000. Although the WTC reduced the participation fees for the athletes from 675 USD for Penticton 2012 to 625 CAD for Whistler 2013 (the exchange rate USD to CAD was approx. 1: 1 in November 2012), the number of participants fell significantly compared to previous years.
In the years before, starting places in Penticton were often only available on the day after the event; if the remaining contingents could still be booked online, they were allocated within a few minutes. The record turnout in Penticton was 2011 with 3226 athletes. In 2013, the number of participants in Whistler was around a third lower with 2,171 athletes. In 2014, however, the number of qualifying places for Hawaii was reduced to fifty again, the prize money remained at US $ 75,000. The number of participants fell again by 12% to 1909 athletes.
In May 2014, WTC bought Lifesport Properties Inc , organizer of the Subaru Western Triathlon Series in western Canada and built the Ironman Western Canada Series with triathlon competitions in Shawnigan Lake, Vancouver , Victoria (all British Columbia), Saskatoon (Saskatchewan) and Banff (Alberta) and the Ironman Canada as the highlight. In 2014, the CEO of the organizer WTC, Andrew Messick, was disappointed in the American triathlon forum slowtwitch.com that fewer professional triathletes took part in Ironman Canada than there were prize money places available. Nevertheless, the prize money was increased by a further US $ 25,000 to US $ 100,000 in 2015.
In 2016, the number of qualifying spots for Hawaii was reduced to forty. In Whistler 2016, prize money was only paid for male professional triathletes (totaling US $ 50,000), while the Ironman Lake Placid is reserved for female professional triathletes. There were no professionals at the start for the women in July 2016 and there were no professionals for the men in 2017.
In 2018, the bike distance was held on a changed route and a circuit to be traveled three times.
The event will be relocated to Penticton again for 2020.
Route
- swim
- The 3.86 km (2.4 miles) swimming distance extends over two laps in Lake Alta. The start takes place as a land start, whereby the male professionals (women are not permitted in 2016) begin their race first. There will be a rolling start for the amateurs. In groups of half a dozen athletes, the participants receive the start clearance at the same time, the individual competition time is measured by means of transponders and timing mats that have to be overrun. The advantage of this measure is that the participants are equalized early on, thus avoiding the formation of a crowd on the bike course. The disadvantage is that the order in the ranking cannot be inferred from the order in which they crossed the finish line.
- To go biking
- This is followed by the 180.2 km (112 miles) long bike course, which extends over a turning point route with two turning points to be traveled once. First from the first transition area on Lake Alta via the Sea-to-Sky Highway into the Callaghan Valley , from there on the same route back and on towards Pemberton , there again via the Sea-to-Sky Highway back towards Whistler to the second transition area .
- To run
- The last is the 42.195 km (26.2 miles) long marathon route. It leads over the Valley Trail around Lost Lake and then as a turning point route to Green Lake and has to be traversed twice. The finish is at the second transition area.
