H. a minimum distance of 10 meters to the athlete in front must be maintained and continuous driving side by side is not permitted.
This series of competitions has been organized by Team Challenge GmbH since 2002 . It was founded in Nuremberg by Herbert Walchshöfer , who has been the press spokesman at Ironman Europe since 1988 , and was later managed by his children Felix and Kathrin and his widow Alice .
Challenge Roth since 2002
The first competition in the series was the Challenge Roth in 2002 , which had previously been held for 14 years as the world's largest long-distance triathlon as a qualifying race for Ironman Hawaii under the name Ironman Europe . From 2003 to 2015, the Challenge Roth was the venue for the German long-distance triathlon championship every year, with the exception of 2011 and 2012 .
2003 was named Worlds Best first time a Challenge Series held: On June 7, 2003 organized Team Challenge in Hilpoltstein the Challenge Hilpoltstein as triathlon over the middle distance, the organizers of the previous nine years over the sprint distance aligned City Triathlon Erding focused on 22 June In 2003, a triathlon over the Olympic distance under the name Challenge Erding for the first time. On July 6th, the winner of the series was honored at Challenge Roth. In 2003, the series was initially to be geared towards Masters and then expanded to include professional triathletes from 2004. In the absence of agreement on the costs, there was no continuation for the Hilpoltstein Challenge , Erding was again advertised as an Erding city triathlon from 2004 - still over the Olympic distance .
In 2007, the Wanaka Challenge followed on New Zealand's South Island as the second long-distance event in the series. The following year, the Challenge Niederbronn-les-Bains resumed a half-distance competition. In 2009 the Challenge Kraichgau , which had previously taken place as the Kraichgau Triathlon Festival , as well as the two competitions of the Challenge Barcelona-Maresme (over the long and half distance) were added. In the years that followed, the number of competitions with a focus on Europe continued to grow, eight races were held in 2010 and twelve challenges took place in 2011.
ETU European Championships long and medium distance since 2012
In 2012 the number of events fell to eleven. To this end, the Challenge Family managed to agree with the European Triathlon Union that since then the European championships will take place over both the long and the middle distance at changing events as part of the Challenge series.
In the following year, the number of events grew to 17, with the Challenge Laguna Phuket and the Challenge Taiwan as well as the Challenge Penticton being held for the first time in Asia and North America . In addition, in October 2012 - immediately before the Ironman Hawaii at a press conference in Kailua-Kona - it was announced that Chris McCormack , two-time winner of Ironman Hawaii and five starts in Roth from 2004 to 2007, would be the serial winner for the next ten years would act as a brand ambassador for the Challenge Family.
26 competitions 2014
In 2014, a total of 26 competitions were held under license from the Challenge Family, eight of which were long-distance. On September 4, 2014, a partnership between the Challenge Family and the North American triathlon series Rev3 was announced. The previous Rev3 competitions have been held under the Challenge label since 2015 , which increased the number of events in North America by eight to twelve competitions. In addition, other new competitions in Europe ( Challenge Denmark , Challenge Heilbronn , Challenge Menorca , Challenge Poznań , Challenge Salou Costa Darouda ), South America (Challenge Maceió) and Asia ( Challenge Camsur , Challenge Dubai ) have been added to the racing calendar.
The Challenge Bahrain, which was held (once) in December 2014, was previously the race with the highest prize money within the series: Here, the top ten winners received a total of USD 500,000 in prize money, and the winners each received USD 100,000 (as of November 2014).
37 competitions 2015
A total of 37 competitions were planned for 2015, eight of them over the long distance. Nine of these took place in the United States, four in Australia and three in Spain.
As part of a “Challenge Triple Crown Series” in 2015 at the three half-distance races in Dubai (February), Oman (August) and Bahrain (December), exceptionally high prizes were announced: The winners of the women and men should each be 65,000 US $, the second place winners each US $ 35,000, the third place winners each US $ 20,000 and a total of prize money up to tenth place has been announced. An additional US $ 1 million was offered for victory in all three races. After the second race planned for the beginning of August in the Sultanate of Oman was canceled for political reasons in May, the final race in Bahrain was brought forward to November and announced as a night race. In October, the race in Bahrain was also canceled on the grounds that, in the second attempt, a safe bike course could not have been guaranteed due to the lack of important permits for a closure.
The competition in Poznan , from 2013 on over the middle distance and in 2015 for the first time with the license of the Challenge series under the name Challenge Poznań, was held for the first time over the long distance in 2016 and hosted the ETU European Championship over the long distance.
In July 2015, Challenge Family announced that in future only members of the newly founded professional triathletes' Professional Triathlon Union (PTO) would be included in the professional categories of their races .
The Walchshöfer family concentrated on Challenge Roth , withdrew from Challenge Family GmbH and Zbigniew (Zibi) Szlufcik has been the sole managing director since 2016.
Challenge World Bonus
A new world ranking was introduced at the beginning of the 2016 season: all results for the current year are converted into a points ranking and at the end of the season a bonus of 165,000 US dollars is paid out to the top five professional athletes. The winners will each receive US $ 30,000, rank two will be rewarded with US $ 20,000 and rank three will receive US $ 15,000. The fourth-place finisher will receive $ 12,000 and the fifth-place finisher will receive an additional $ 5,000.
In 2018, Sebastian Kienle and Pablo Dapena González shared the title with equal points and, as in the previous year, the women’s victory went to Yvonne van Vlerken .

Relationship to the WTC and its Ironman brand
The Challenge Roth as the origin of the Challenge series had become the fourth qualification race outside the USA for Ironman Hawaii in 1988 under the name Ironman Europe and quickly developed into the largest long-distance triathlon worldwide with a six-digit number of spectators on site, up to 4,000 registrations for 2,700 starting places as well as high media presence. After the WTC , owner of the rights to the Ironman brand and the Ironman Hawaii since 1990 , demanded higher license fees, a reduction in the starting places in Roth and changes to the competition mode, the organizer in Roth refused to extend the license agreement with the WTC in 2001 and set up the Since then the competition has been called Challenge Roth.
The Ironman Germany in Frankfurt - from 2002 the new license partner of the WTC in Germany - quickly developed into the second major long-distance triathlon in Germany and thus a tough competition between the organizers. For example, the Frankfurt competitor caused an uproar in the run-up to the second event in 2003 when it claimed the traditional Roth date on the second Sunday in July. At the same time, Frankfurt recruited top starters such as Thomas Hellriegel , Markus Forster and Stefan Holzner after they had previously been presented as participants at press conferences in Roth. In 2008 Frankfurt attracted Chris McCormack , who had previously started five times in a row in Roth, with an entry fee of € 100,000 in addition to the prize money. In 2010, the WTC installed a second German Ironman competition in Regensburg only around 100 kilometers from Roth - but this was discontinued after the third event and ran as Challenge Regensburg since 2016 and 2017 .
In 2012, the WTC bought USM Events , as a license partner of the Challenge Family, organizer of the Challenge Cairns in Australia, a few months before the competition, which at that time was almost fully booked, despite existing contracts with the Challenge Family, and turned it into the Ironman Cairns .
In return, the organizer of Ironman Canada in Penticton, the most traditional Ironman qualifier outside the USA (New Zealand and Japan started two years earlier, but have since changed location), announced its license agreement with the WTC in 2012 and became the Challenge Penticton . In October, at the birthplace of the Ironman brand, of all places, the Challenge Family announced a few days before the start of the Ironman Hawaii that Chris McCormack would become a brand ambassador for the Challenge Family as a two-time Hawaii winner for the next ten years. In return, the WTC installed a new Ironman event in Whistler practically on Penticton's front door - under the name that Penticton had previously made known twenty-five years ago. In June 2013 the WTC then bought YWC Sports ApS , previously a license partner of the Challenge Family as the organizer of the Challenge Aarhus and Challenge Copenhagen competitions , in order to continue these races under its label.
The preliminary climax was reached in October 2013: the WTC not only bought Sports Promotion UG as the previous organizer of Challenge Kraichgau , but also appointed Björn Steinmetz, previously the most important partner of Team Challenge in the development of its series, as the new European managing director of WTC a. The Challenge Family, however, insisted on the fulfillment of the contract - in 2014, the Challenge Kraichgau was the first race in the Challenge series organized by the WTC. In May 2014 the WTC also announced that it had bought Tritlon Spain SL - previously a license partner of the Challenge Family as the organizer of the Half-Challenge Barcelona in spring and the Challenge Barcelona-Maresme in autumn. At the end of 2014, the WTC bought Optimum Sports Events , which had previously been the organizer of Challenge Vichy in France.
After the license agreements between the acquired organizers and the Challenge Family expressly excluded a sale to the WTC, Challenge filed a lawsuit against its former contractual partners in the summer of 2015.

Challenge World Series 2020
Many of the events originally planned for 2020 had to be canceled or postponed as the coronavirus spread around the world (e.g. Challenge St. Pölten).
As part of the Challenge Samorin (The Championship) at the end of May 2020, the first "Collins Cup" in triathlon announced by the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) was to be held. The athletes will receive $ 2 million in prize money, which will be divided between the best 18 male and 18 female athletes.
In 2020 the race, which has so far been held thirteen times as Ironman 70.3 Austria in Austria, is to be held for the first time as part of the international Challenge racing series as "Challenge St. Pölten". The Challenge Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl won the bid to host the ETU European Championships on the middle distance in 2020. The originally planned Challenge Prague had in February 2020 to be canceled.
The Challenge St. Pölten, Challenge Walchsee-Kaiserwinkl and Challenge Davos will join forces in 2020 in what is known as the “Challenge the Alps”.

Challenge World Series 2017
On June 3, 2017 in Šamorín, Slovakia , “The Championship” was the first world championship of the Challenge racing series on the half distance (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running).
At the Challenge Regensburg , the German championships over the long distance were held on August 13, 2017.
Sven Riederer is co-organizer of the “Challenge Davos Festival”. With the Challenge Davos , a new race in Switzerland was added to the racing series in September 2017. Due to the cold weather conditions, the race had to be held as a bike run competition.
The Florianópolis Challenge, planned for December as the last race of the season, had to be canceled due to weather conditions.
With eleven gold medals, the athletes from the United Kingdom took the lead in the annual ranking after 31 races in the 2017 season - ahead of Germany (9 gold medals) and Canada (6 gold medals). The Swiss athletes achieved three gold medals and Thomas Steger won the two gold medals for Austria.
