The Clyde River flows into the sea at Batemans Bay.
As the closest coastal town to Canberra, Batemans Bay is a popular vacation destination for many capital city dwellers. It's also a popular spot for retirees, but it also attracts young families who work in Canberra. The local economy is also based on fishing, forestry, ecotourism and retail.
James Cook named the bay on April 22, 1770 either after Nathaniel Bateman, captain of Lord Colvill's ship HMS Northumberland , or after John Bateman (1721-1802), the second Viscount Bateman.
