Due to the very wooded area and the favorable location on the water, logging , fishing and shipbuilding soon became the main industries and the place was chosen as the administrative seat of Charlotte County. Lumber and fishery products were shipped to the West Indies and Great Britain in exchange for molasses and rum . At the beginning of the 20th century , due to the excellent climatic conditions, the place developed into a popular summer residence for wealthy citizens from Boston and Montreal as well as other cities on the North American east coast, who preferred to use the Algonquin Hotel, built in 1889, which burned down in 1914 but was later rebuilt . During the Great Depression , with the increase in the production of privately used automobiles and the creation of new recreational areas on the North American continent, St. Andrews quickly lost its preferred position as a holiday center.
