Sebastian Kienle (born July 6, 1984 in Mühlacker ) is a German triathlete and winner of the Ironman Hawaii 2014. He is included in the best list of German triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

Sebastian Kienle started his triathlon career at the age of 12. During his physics studies in Karlsruhe , Kienle practiced triathlon semi-professionally in the Tri Team Heuchelberg . After completing his intermediate diploma , he dropped out. Since then he has been studying international management at Ansbach University , a course specially designed for top athletes with the support of the DOSB, with a mixture of face-to-face phases and distance learning.

German champion cross-triathlon 2005

In September 2005 he became German cross triathlon champion at X-Terra Germany and he was able to secure this title for the third time in the following year and in 2010.

In 2009 Kienle was the fastest at the Ironman 70.3 Germany 2009 in Wiesbaden . He needed 4:04:35 hours for half the Ironman distance (1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running) and set a new course record.

In 2010 Kienle competed in the long distance for the first time (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running). He finished second at the Challenge Roth and achieved the fastest long distance premiere of all time with 7:59:06 hours. With his time of 4:14:07 h, he set a new long-distance world record in cycling, which he undercut Jürgen Zäck's eleven-year-old record by eleven seconds.

After a race in Wiesbaden that had been canceled due to three wheel falls, Kienle decided not to start at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships 2011 in Las Vegas.

Winner Ironman 70.3 World Championship 2012

In July 2012 he finished second in the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt and in September he won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. In October, Kienle reached fourth place in his first start at Ironman Hawaii after technical problems while cycling, while in the lead, had thrown him back. The 2012 season brought Kienle more international recognition, especially after his triumph at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

In September 2013 he was able to defend his title and again won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in the middle distance in Las Vegas. At the Ironman in Hawaii, he reached the podium and was the best German in third place.

Winner Ironman Hawaii 2014

In June 2014 he became German champion in the middle distance in Kraichgau. On July 6, 2014, his 30th birthday, he won the Ironman Germany and won the Ironman European Championship. On October 11, 2014, he triumphed at the Ironman Hawaii and won the Ironman World Championship. In 2014, Kienle won $ 145,000 in prize money in Ironman competitions, making him the highest-earning athlete in this regard.

In the 2015 season he started for the newly founded Bahrain Elite Endurance Triathlon Team , which is led by Australian Chris McCormack . On July 5th he finished second at the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt. In August he came second in the middle distance of the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in the Austrian province of Salzburg as part of the Ironman 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun .

Second Ironman Hawaii 2016

In September 2016 he finished second again at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Australia. In October, he finished second in the combined rankingKona-Maui Double Winner ” (Xterra and Ironman).

In July 2017 he was able to win the Ironman European Championships for the third time in Frankfurt am Main with 7:41:42 h and thus a new personal best. At the Ironman Hawaii in October 2017, he finished fourth. A few kilometers from the finish he was overtaken by the British David McNamee and pushed out of the medal contest. Sebastian Kienle was trained by Luboš Bílek for thirteen years from 2006 to 2018 . Kienle's new trainer since the end of 2018 is Philipp Seipp . B. also trains Laura Philipp .

In May 2019, the 34-year-old became German champion in the middle distance triathlon for the third time with his victory at the Challenge Heilbronn . In October he finished third at the Ironman Hawaii for the second time after 2013.

Sebastian Kienle is married and now lives in Mühlacker with his wife, runner and duathlete (German duathlon champion 2012), Christine Schleifer .
