A few months before the start of the second edition, the contingent of 1500 participants was booked out. Audi was won as the main sponsor and an Audi A6 3.0 TDI was available as a bonus for the winners.

In 2013, the City Triathlon Cup Germany was launched together with the Frankfurt City Triathlon , and the starter continent was expanded to 1650 participants. A school triathlon the day before completed the program.

In July 2014 it was announced at a press conference of Challenge Roth that the event will be part of the Challenge Family World Series as Challenge Heilbronn from 2015 . The length of the main competition was changed to 1.9 km swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running. The Baden-Württemberg Triathlon Association again awarded the organization of state championships to the Challenge Heilbronn.

At the first start under the new label Challenge Heilbronn , a renowned top field entered the showdown in 2015 : The reigning winner of the Ironman World Championships , Sebastian Kienle , stepped among others. a. against Michael Raelert , Andreas Dreitz , Nils Frommhold , Andreas Böcherer , Maurice Clavel , Horst Reichel , Ronnie Schildknecht and Giulio Molinari . Among the women were u. a. Anja Beranek , Svenja Bazlen , Laura Philipp , Jenny Schulz , Ricarda Lisk , Daniela Sämmler , Katja Konschak and Natascha Badmann at the start.

In addition to the traditional route formats over the Olympic distance and the people's distance as well as the school triathlon, the supporting program of the Challenge Heilbronn also included a women's run.

For 2016, the German Triathlon Union awarded the German championships over the middle distance to the Challenge Heilbronn. The championship, which was awarded here for the first time in June 2016, had to be held as a duathlon due to the weather - but the DTU decided to let the result count as DM. With Laura Philipp and Andreas Böcherer, the winners from the previous year were able to successfully defend their titles for both women and men and thus secure the championship title. In May 2019 the DTU German Championship in the middle distance was held again.

The event originally planned for June 21, 2020 had to be canceled in April as the coronavirus pandemic spread . On May 12, 2020, the organizer announced that the event could no longer take place in the future because an appeal for solidarity, which was supposed to plug the financial holes, had not had enough success.

Route

  • The swimming stretch of 1.9 km began a few meters south of the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke and, as a turning point, led through a branch of the Neckar to Wertwiesenpark and back, from the exit on the Hefenweiler Island it went over the Kraneninsel past the Hagenbucher to the transition area at Wilhelm Canal . The Challenge Heilbronn was one of only a few triathlon events in Germany with a swimming course in the middle of a big city, where urban flair and the atmosphere of a large city park were mixed, both on both sides of the Neckar arm and on the Friedrich-Ebert -Brücke and Rosenbergbrücke created a great atmosphere for several thousand spectators.
  • In 2018, the 90 km bike course led over a changed route for the first time and instead of two loops in the Zabergäu before, the athletes only drove one large bike lap, which now also included the Kraichgau .
  • The running route over three laps with a total of 21.1 km led initially via Kaiserstraße , including the 11th-century Kilian's Church, to Heilbronn's old town and through the pedestrian zone via Kiliansplatz and Allerheiligenstraße back to Altneckar. On the western bank promenade of the Altneckar, the athletes ran to the Sontheimer Bridge and after crossing the Wertwiesen Park behind the Villa Mertz back to the old town. The destination on the Heilbronn market square was framed by the historic Käthchenhaus , the town hall dating back to the 16th century , the Zehender house and the Kilian's Church.
