Sven Riederer (born March 27, 1981 in Albisrieden ) is a former Swiss triathlete , multiple Swiss champion (between 2002 and 2017), vice European triathlon champion (2015) and multiple Olympic participant (2004, 2012, 2016). He is included in the list of Swiss triathletes on the Ironman distance .
Career
In his youth Riederer was sporty and versatile; he played tennis and football, competed in skiing and was a swimmer. In 1994 he took part in a triathlon for the first time in Bubikon and reached 16th place.
Triathlon European Champion Juniors 2001
His international breakthrough came in 2001 with the European Junior Championship. In 2002 he was European champion in the U-23 category and second in the world championship. In 2003 he was able to win the gold medal in the team competition at the European Championship. He mainly competes in races over the Olympic distance : 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running.
2004 Summer Olympics
Riederer celebrated his greatest success at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , when he won the bronze medal behind Hamish Carter and Bevan Docherty from New Zealand . In 2005 a third place followed at the European Championships.
With his running skills , Riederer is also among the top Swiss there. He has already won the Swiss championship title in the 10 km race on the road three times (2006, 2008, 2010) .
Riederer has been part of the EWZ Power Team since 2010 and he was a member of the Swiss Triathlon Team London 2012 .
Riederer was appointed a member of the "Gold Group" by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) for the 2011 season - the ten best women and men from previous years represent the ITU in public and secure their national associations for each of the seven races of the ITU World Championship Series an additional starting place.
2012 Summer Olympics
In June 2012 he was able to qualify for a starting place at the Olympic Games for the second time. In London he competed for Switzerland with Nicola Spirig , Daniela Ryf and Ruedi Wild and finished eighth.
In July 2015, he became vice European champion on the short distance triathlon in Geneva. In the 2015 world rankings, he was ranked 13th as the best Swiss.
2016 Summer Olympics
Sven Riederer was able to qualify for a place at the Summer Olympics for the third time in 2016 and he started for Switzerland on August 18, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro together with Nicola Spirig , Jolanda Annen and Andrea Salvisberg . Riederer took 19th place. In the ITU Point List, he came in 93rd as the second best Swiss.
Long distance triathlon since 2017
In September 2017, Riederer started the long-distance triathlon for the first time (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running). He finished twelfth at the Ironman Barcelona and with this result also entered the list of Swiss triathletes on the Ironman distance . In July 2019, the then 38-year-old Riederer declared his start at Ironman Switzerland , where he finished second, for his last race and his active time over.
Riederer is a trained metal worker and lives with his wife and a son in Wallisellen .

- The Swiss Sports Aid Foundation honored Riederer as Young Athlete of the Year 2001.
