Daniela Ryf [ ˈriːf ] (born May 29, 1987 in Solothurn ) is a Swiss triathlete and two-time Olympic participant (2008, 2012). She is U-23 world champion (2008), world champion in mixed relay (2009, 2010) and Swiss champion in the short distance triathlon (2012, 2013). She has also won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship five times (middle distance: 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) and is a four-time winner of the Ironman World Championships (long distance: 2015-2018). Ryf is listed as the leader in the list of Swiss women triathletes on the Ironman distance .
Career
Daniela Ryf from Solothurn first took part in a school triathlon in 2000. Three Swiss championship titles followed in the youth category. She achieved her first international success at the 2003 European Championship when she won the gold medal in the team classification.
Junior European Triathlon Champion 2004
In 2004 and 2005, two further European junior championship titles followed in the individual ranking, and in 2006 a bronze medal was added in the team ranking. She was trained by Claude Ammann (2000-2008), Darren Smith (2008-09), Chris Lang (2010) and Craig Walton (2011). Her nicknames are "Stella" or "Angry Bird".
From 2003 to 2006 Ryf became Swiss Junior Champion four times in a row. On June 8, 2008, she won the triathlon world title in Vancouver in the U-23 category and qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics , where she finished seventh. In 2009 she won the World Championship in Mixed Relay (team ranking) in Des Moines together with Magali Di Marco Messmer , Ruedi Wild and Lukas Salvisberg . The following year in Lausanne she defended this title in the Swiss team together with Nicola Spirig , Ruedi Wild and Sven Riederer .
2012 Summer Olympics
In June 2012 she also qualified for a start at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where she competed for Switzerland with Nicola Spirig, Sven Riederer and Ruedi Wild and reached 40th place. In September 2012 she became Swiss champion over the Olympic triathlon distance in Murten.
Daniela Ryf was a member of the Elite B team in the Swiss Triathlon Team in 2013 . In May she started the Ironman half-distance in St. Pölten, Austria, and in August she won the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Wiesbaden .
Since 2014 she has been supervised by Australian Brett Sutton (also coaches Nicola Spirig; “Trainer of the Year 2017”) and former cyclist Armin Meier . In June 2014, when she won the Ironman 70.3 Switzerland in Rapperswil-Jona , she was able to improve her best time in the middle distance of 4:00:14 h and set a new course record. At the end of July she won the 5150 European Championship in Zurich and the next day at her first start on the long distance also the Ironman Switzerland . This victory gave her the points that were still missing in the “Kona Pro Ranking System” of the WTC for a start three months later at the Ironman Hawaii . In September she won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Canada . Five weeks later, she finished second in the Ironman World Championship. Of the prize money distributed by the WTC in 2014, a total of 125,000 US dollars went to Daniela Ryf, more than any other triathlete at competitions organized by the WTC.
Ironman Hawaii 2015 winner
Since the beginning of 2015 Ryf has started for the newly founded Bahrain Elite Endurance Triathlon Team , which is led by Australian Chris McCormack . In May 2015 she won the Ironman 70.3 Mallorca with a new course record, which was her sixth victory in a row in a competition at this distance.
In June she won the Ironman European Championship on her fourth start in a competition over the Ironman distance in Frankfurt. Despite extremely high temperatures, which resulted in the highest dropout rate in the history of the event, she undercut the course record with a new personal best at this distance of 8:51:00 h. In August she won the Ironman 70.3 World Championship as part of the Ironman 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun . In October she was only the second Swiss woman to win the Ironman Hawaii after the six-time winner Natascha Badmann . As the second woman after Leanda Cave (2012), she won both the Ironman 70.3 World Championship and the Ironman World Championship within one calendar year.
With her victory in the middle distance in Bahrain in December 2015, she won the overall ranking of the “Triple Crown Series” from the Challenge Dubai , the Ironman 70.3 World Championship and the Ironman 70.3 Bahrain and thus the highest prize money in the history of triathlon of $ 1 million.
Winner Challenge Roth and Ironman Hawaii 2016
In June 2016 she won the Ironman 70.3 Switzerland for the third time in a row . In July, she set her personal best at Challenge Roth with her winning time of 8:22:04 h and the third fastest time ever achieved by a woman on the long distance. A week later she started at the next long distance and won the 20th Ironman Switzerland with a new course record on the new route. In October she improved the course record at the Ironman Hawaii by more than five minutes and successfully defended her title at the Ironman World Championship.
Winner Ironman Hawaii and Ironman 70.3 World Championship 2017
In July 2017, she defended her success at Challenge Roth. In September she became the first female athlete to win the Ironman 70.3 World Championships for the third time after 2014 and 2015. In October she won the Ironman Hawaii for the third time in a row. After she was in eighth place after the swim, 4:23 minutes behind, she took the lead with her bike and did not give it up on the marathon distance. Daniela Ryf was the highest earning athlete in the 2017 season.
In May 2018, the 30-year-old joined the new Breitling triathlon team with Jan Frodeno and Chris McCormack .
In July she won the Ironman European Championships for the second time after 2015 at Ironman Germany with a new course record (8:38:44 hrs) and reached the finish in seventh place overall.
Fourth win at the Ironman Hawaii 2018
In October, the then 31-year-old won the Ironman Hawaii for the fourth time in a row. Daniela Ryf came out of the water more than nine minutes after leading Lucy Charles , but passed the Briton towards the end of the bike course. With the new best time on the Ironman distance of 8:26:16 h, she set a new course record for women in Hawaii and undercut her previous record from 2016 by more than 20 minutes. Daniela Ryf was the leader in the prize money ranking for the 2018 season with 201,000 US dollars (as of October 20).
With the Ironman Texas , Ryf was able to win her 13th race on the Ironman distance in April 2019. With the exception of second place on her Hawaii debut in 2014, Ryf had won every race in which she crossed the Ironman distance up to October 2019. In October, the 32-year-old from Solothurn, who started as the favorite, placed 13th at the Ironman Hawaii.
Daniela Ryf lives in Feldbrunnen-St. Niklaus . During the season she trains and lives in St. Moritz .
