Kathleen McCartney Hearst (* 25. March 1959 as Kathleen McCartney ) is a former American triathlete and winner of the Ironman Hawaii (1982).

Career

Kathleen McCartney gained international fame when she was able to overtake Julie Moss , who had previously been in the lead, shortly before the finish line at Ironman Hawaii in February 1982 : Moss had collapsed dehydrated and was finally able to cross the finish line on all fours in second place. This scene was broadcast live worldwide and has inspired many athletes to take part in the Ironman competition.

She then took a break to look after her children and started on Kona again in 2003. In 2012 Kathleen McCartney and Julie Moss competed again in Hawaii. This was the eighth start for McCartney.

In October 2017, the then 58-year-old started again in Hawaii after 35 years, but could not finish the race. It started again in 2018. In 2018 she finished 50th in her age group.

Kathleen McCartney Hearst lives in La Jolla, California.
