Christine Ann Wellington , OBE (born February 18, 1977 in Bury St Edmunds ) is a former British triathlete . She is world champion over the long distance (2008) and four-time winner of the Ironman Hawaii (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011). Wellington holds the current world best time in triathlon over the long distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running) (set up on July 10, 2011 at Challenge Roth ) as well as the current world best time in an Ironman race ( erected on April 10, 2011 in South Africa). She also held the course record at the Ironman Hawaii between 2009 and 2013.
Career
Chrissie Wellington grew up in the village of Feltwell near Thetford and was a swimmer in her youth. After graduating from the University of Birmingham with an honors degree in geography in 1998 , she initially traveled the world for two years before graduating in October 2001 with a Masters in Development Research from the University of Manchester . After two years in development aid at the Department of Agriculture, Wellington went on a sabbatical to Nepal for one year, where she worked for the non-governmental organization RRN. After resuming her job in Great Britain, nine months later in January 2007, she decided to start a professional career as a triathlete.
Professional triathlete since 2007
In 2002 Chrissie Wellington had already participated in the London Marathon (3:08:17 h) and in 2004 in the first triathlon competitions up to the Olympic distance. With the victory at the Shropshire Triathlon in June 2006, she managed to be nominated by the British Triathlon Federation for the amateur competitions at the World Championships in September 2006 in Lausanne, where she won her age group. At the same time, she dominated numerous cross-country runs in the London region.
Chrissie Wellington started as a professional athlete in 2007 and 2008 for Team TBB, was trained by Brett Sutton and later by Simon Lessing and the six-time winner of the Ironman Hawaii, Dave Scott . Just six months after starting her professional career, she won the Ironman Korea with 50 minutes ahead of the second-placed woman, another six weeks later the Ironman Hawaii for the first time. a. the Ironman Germany and the world championships over the long distance .
World champion triathlon long distance 2008
After winning the Ironman Hawaii for the second time in a row and winning the World Championship title in 2008, she was named Triathlete of the Year in Great Britain. When Wellington won the Ironman Hawaii for the third time in a row in 2009, she managed to undercut the 17-year-old course record set by eight-time winner Paula Newby-Fraser in 1992.
In January 2010, she injured herself in a fall while training, had to undergo surgery on her hand and arm after several broken bones and had to pause for a few weeks.
World record on the Ironman distance 2010
In November 2010 Chrissie Wellington won the Ironman Arizona in 8:36:13 h with the fastest time ever set by a woman in a race in the Ironman series, which she herself did on April 10, 2011 with 8:33:56 h in the Ironman South Africa was able to undercut again.
Fourth win of the Ironman Hawaii 2011
In 2009, 2010 and 2011 Wellington was able to triumph three times in a row at the world's largest long-distance triathlon, the Challenge Roth . She achieved her first victory in Roth with 8:31:59 h, the fastest time ever achieved by a woman over this distance, which she again undercut in her two subsequent victories.
Since July 10, 2011, with her winning time of 8:18:13 h at the Challenge Roth, she has held the world's best time for women over a distance of 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling and 42.2 km running.
In January 2012 Wellington announced that he would take a break for a year, not start at an Ironman competition and take care of the completion of her autobiography "A Life Without Limits". After the book was published, she declared her active career over in December 2012.
Chrissie Wellington has been married to former professional triathlete Tom Lowe (* 1978) since May 2015 .

- The British newspaper Sunday Times declared her "Sportswoman of the Year" in 2009.
- In June 2010 she was awarded the British Knightly Order Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire ( MBE ) at the New Year Honors .
- In 2016 he was honored as Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).
- In September 2017 it was announced that Wellington would be awarded the “Ironman Hall of Fame” in October .
