Joanne Ernst
Joanne Ernst (* 1958 / 1959 in Calgary ) is a former American triathlete and winner of the Ironman Hawaii (1985).
Career
In 1985, Joanne Ernst won the Ironman Hawaii (Ironman World Championships) when it was last held as a purely amateur event without prize money in the absence of Sylvianne and Patricia Puntous , Julie Olson (the top 3 of the previous year) and other top athletes, all two Weeks earlier at the Longue Distance de Nice triathlon .
The following year, in October 1986, she crossed the finish line as the fourth woman, but was honored as third after Patricia Puntous was subsequently disqualified.
Joanne Ernst has been married to management expert Jim Collins since 1980 , whom she met at an eight-mile running event in the spring of the same year. Ernst and Collins were both students at Stanford University at the time . Ernst and Collins both continued to participate regularly in marathons and triathlon competitions. After she managed to place in the top ten in a well-attended competition despite poor swimming performance, Ernst confronted her husband a few weeks later, according to his statements in one of his books, with the statement that she believed she would win the Ironman Hawaii can. Both then left the university to enable Ernst a career as one of the first professional triathletes. Collins quit his job at Hewlett-Packard and acted as a manager of Ernst, organized sponsorship agreements and the like. a. with Nike and Budweiser .
Ernst later worked as a trainer at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado . After the diagnosis of breast cancer in autumn 2002 and an operation in spring 2003, she stopped working at the end of the 2003 season. Another preventive operation followed in spring 2004.
