Linda Sweeney (* 1959 in San Diego ) is a former American triathlete . She is the winner of the Ironman Hawaii in 1981.

Career

In college in her teens, Sweeney took part in running and swimming competitions over the middle distance.

She found out about Ironman Hawaii through friends and was in a relationship with the athlete Tom Hunt (US record holder over 10 km in 1981).
The then 25-year-old was able to achieve the victory in 12:00:32 h in February 1981, at the third women’s competition. At that time there were 20 women at the start.

In 1982 Linda Sweeney had to end her young professional career after a stress fracture.

Today she works in San Diego as the director of development. Sweeney graduated from the University of Arizona .
