Paula Newby-Fraser (born June 2, 1962 in Salisbury , South Rhodesia ) is a former duathlete and triathlete from Zimbabwe and the world's most successful long-distance athlete.

Career

Paula Newby-Fraser was born in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and her family moved to South Africa when she was four. In her youth she was successful in swimming actively and as a 23-year-old, she moved in March 1986 from Durban to San Diego in the US state of California , where they are on triathlon concentrated.
In 1993 she became a citizen of the United States .

Winner of the Ironman World Championships 1986

Newby-Fraser has won the two triathlon events of the 1980s and 1990s with the greatest media attention, the Triathlon Longue Distance de Nice and the Ironman Hawaii , more than any other woman : from 1989 to 1992 she won four times in a row in Nice and is only surpassed in this by Mark Allen . At Ironman Hawaii, she was able to win eight times (1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996), which no other person in the world has achieved and earned her the nickname "Queen of Kona" . In October 1986, Paula Newby-Fraser was the second woman to cross the finish line 92 seconds behind Patricia Puntous , but Patricia Puntous was disqualified at the finish for drafting on the bike course and Fraser won the first Ironman Hawaii at the age of 24, with the prize money Winner was distributed. She undercut Sylviane Puntous' best time (1984) by almost another 36 minutes.

She also holds the record for the most consecutive victories in women (four times between 1991 and 1994) together with Daniela Ryf (four times between 2015 and 2018), but is surpassed here in men by Mark Allen (five times between 1989 and 1993 ). In 1993, 1994 and 1996 she was listed in the Ironman Hawaii results lists as a US state. Newby-Fraser's greatest competitor was Erin Baker from New Zealand .

Ironman world record 1994

For over 14 years Paula Newby-Fraser was the reigning world record holder over the Ironman distance with a time of 8:50:53 h, set up in 1994 at the Ironman Europe in Roth . On July 13th, 2008 she lost this crown to Yvonne van Vlerken (8:45:48 h) in Roth and Sandra Wallenhorst (8:47:25 h) at Ironman Austria in Klagenfurt. Newby-Fraser has won a total of 24 Ironman races since 1986.

In order to start running with as little pre-stress as possible on the calf muscles, Paula Newby-Fraser used cycling shoes as early as 2000, the contact of which on the pedals is further back towards the ankle and the reduced lever reduces the stress when cycling from under to over Shifted thighs ( see also: Triathlon # Material ).

In October 2005, Paula Newby-Fraser married Paul Huddle - a former US professional triathlete who also worked as her trainer.
