Edwige Pitel (born June 4, 1967 in Dinan ) is a French athlete who was active in duathlon , road and track cycling as well as cross-country running. She is world champion on the long distance duathlon (2000), European and world champion on the short distance duathlon (2003) and started at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Athletic career

From 1997 Pitel was active as a duathlete at competitive sports level. In 2003 she became duathlon world champion and 1998 vice world champion in the short distance and 2000 world champion in the long distance. In 2003 she also became European champion in the duathlon. She was French champion in this discipline seven times - from 1998 to 2003 and 2005. She was also a member of the victorious French team at the 1996 European Cross Country Championships and was champion of the Mediterranean in 2001 and Provence champion in this discipline in 2002 .

From 2001, Pitel also started cycling on the road. In 2001, 2004 and 2005 she won the Chrono des Herbiers time trial competition , the Tour de Bretagne in 2003 and the Circuit National Féminin de Saint-Amand-Montrond and the GP International Fémin in 2005 . In 2009 she won the Mount Hood Classic in the United States . In 2004 and 2005 she became French champion in the individual time trial , in 2007 and 2016 in road racing. In 2008 she also won the national scratch title on the track. In addition, she placed in numerous other races at the top.

2004 Summer Olympics

In 2004 Edwige Pitel started at the Olympic Games in Athens and finished 20th in the individual time trial and 32nd in the road race.

At times Pitel was trained by the husband of her fiercest rival Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli , Patrice Ciprelli. When he was suspected of having acquired EPO in 2007 , she came under suspicion of doping, which could not be confirmed. Because of this constellation, the couple Ciprelli had marital problems.

In 2008, she tried in vain to the cycling team for the Olympic Games in Beijing sue.

Professional background

In 1985 Edwige Pitel graduated from high school and then studied engineering with a focus on mathematics and computer science . In 1994 she became a research assistant at Imperial College London , where she also received her PhD on queues with negative customers .
