Catherine Marsal

Catherine Marsal (born January 20, 1971 in Metz ) is a former French cyclist , world champion and today's trainer . Alongside Jeannie Longo , she was France's dominant racing driver in the 1990s .

Life

Catherine Marsal started cycling at the age of eight. She was born as the first girl after five older brothers and wanted to show them what a girl can be capable of. She won her first national title at the age of 13, and at the age of 16 became world junior road racing champion at the 1987 UCI Road World Championships in Bergamo .

1990 was the year of Catherine Marsal: She became road world champion in Utsunomiya , Japan , won the Tour of Texas , the Tour de l'Aude , the Giro d'Italia Femminile , the Tour of Norway, the EEC Tour and the French championship title.

Marsal was four times world champion, nine times French champion on track and road and took part in the Olympic Games four times. In the course of her career, she achieved around 150 victories and was on the podium a total of eleven times at world championships on track and road.

On April 19, 1995 Catherine Marsal presented at the velodrome of Bordeaux a new hour world record (47.112 km) and therefore improved the record of Jeannie Longo to 800 m.

Catherine Marsal drove as a professional road racing driver until 2004, a. a. in the Saturn Cycling Team together with Petra Roßner .

Because of a bone disease Marsal had to quit active cycling. Today she works as a trainer and lives in Copenhagen, where she studied nutritional sciences at the university there .
