Elizabeth Lee "Beth" Heiden (born September 27, 1959 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is a former American speed skater and cyclist .

Career

In 1979, Beth Heiden was the first American woman to win the races over all four track lengths - from 500 to 3000 meters - and became the overall world champion in speed skating. At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , she won the bronze medal over the 3000 m long distance. In 1980, Beth Heiden was also world champion in road racing and in 1979 and 1980 she was national champion three times.

Her brother Eric Heiden won all five gold medals at the 1980 Olympic Games in speed skating, from the 500 m sprint to the 10,000 m marathon.

Personal

Beth Heiden had four children. Two sons named Garrett and Carl and their daughter Susan Elizabeth, who died of heart, liver and kidney problems at the age of 19 days.

Her youngest daughter Joanne Reid takes since the season 2015/16 at the Biathlon World Cup in part and qualified for participation in the Olympic Winter Games in 2018 in Pyeongchang .
