Mari Holden

Mari Kim Holden Paulsen (born March 30, 1971 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is a former American triathlete , cyclist and world champion.

Triathlon

Mari Holden began her athletic career as a triathlete. She was part of the US juniors triathlon team and was named "Junior Triathlete of the Year" in 1991. At the Junior World Championships in the same year, she finished seventh. Then she concentrated on cycling.

Cycling

In 2000, Holden won the world title in the individual time trial in 2000 after winning the silver medal in this discipline at the Olympic Games in Sydney in the same year. She was US champion six times and was the first American woman to win the national title in the individual time trial three times in a row. In 1999 she scored a double when she became American champion in both time trial and road racing.

Personal and professional

In 2006 Mari Holden retired from active cycling. From 2000 she was a member of the board of the national association "USA Cycling", advisor to the US Olympic Committee and athlete representative at the "US Anti-Doping Agency". In 2008, Ride Magazine named her one of the “greatest ambassadors in cycling”. She works as a personal trainer , looks after Paralympic athletes and is committed to charitable projects such as the Million Dollar Challenge to support disabled and disadvantaged young athletes.

Holden grew up in Ventura , now she lives in Del Mar and works as a personal trainer . In June 2013, she was inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame . She is in a relationship with former baseball player Barry Bonds , who is involved in the BALCO doping affair .
