Athletic career
Hanka Kupfernagel grew up in Neustadt an der Orla and started cycling at BSG Motor Neustadt / Orla at the age of eleven before moving to the GDR performance center SG Wismut Gera at the age of 13 .
In her specialty, the cyclo-cross race , she was dominant in Germany and was one of the best in the world. When the Women's Cyclocross World Championships were introduced in 2000, she was the first to achieve the title of world champion. In the following years she finished on the podium every time, in 2001, 2005 and 2008 she won further gold. She was also successful in road cycling: at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 she won silver in road races and was awarded the silver laurel leaf for this - like all German medalists at the Olympic Games in 2000 . From 1997 to 1999 she was first in the world rankings and in 2007 she won the individual time trial at the road cycling world championships in Stuttgart .
On the track she became Junior World Champion in 1991 and 1992, but in the following years she concentrated on the road. She only came back to the track in 2004 and qualified straight away with three third places at the World Cups in Manchester and Moscow for the World Track Championships , where she narrowly missed the Olympic qualification. The following year she had to take a break from competition for several months due to a burnout syndrome .
On July 30, 2016, Hanka Kupfernagel completed her farewell race as part of the Après Tour Gera together with friends from cycling.
In 2018, Hanka Kupfernagel was named as the first woman by the organizer ASO to regulate the Germany Tour . As a companion on the motorcycle, she will ensure that the race runs smoothly together with the Frenchman Franck Perque .
In January 2019, after a three-year break from racing, Kupfernagel made a comeback at the German cyclo-cross championships.
Personal and family
Born in Gera / Thuringia, she grew up with 3 brothers in Neustadt / Orla. 1988–1990 she went to the sports school in Gera, then 1 year to the ASK Frankfurt / Oder . From 1994 to 2000 she lived and trained in Berlin and Brandenburg . After the Olympics in Sydney, she became an honorary citizen of Werder / Havel, where she lived until 2004.
