Eleonora Maria "Ellen" van Dijk (born February 11, 1987 in Harmelen ) is a Dutch cyclist who competes in races on the road and on the track . Up to and including 2017, she was six times world champion and four times European champion.
Personal
Ellen van Dijk grew up in Woerden, Harmelen ( Utrecht ) and has two brothers. She currently lives in Amsterdam . In 2005 she graduated from the Minkema College ( Woerden ) and acquired in 2011 the Bachelor in Human Movement Sciences at the Free University of Amsterdam . After the 2012 Summer Olympics , she intended to complete a Masters in Human Movement Sciences.
Athletic career
Ellen van Dijk was very athletic from childhood; she practiced gymnastics , volleyball and speed skating . She eventually got into cycling through her brother.
In 2003 Eleonora van Dijk was the first Dutch road champion of the youth. In the years that followed, she was able to repeat this success several times in different age groups and in different disciplines on rail and road. In 2006 she became the university world champion on the road. In 2008 she was European street champion in Stresa ; at the European Rail Championships (youngsters) in the same year she was able to win two titles ( scratch , points race ). In addition, she was able to record numerous stage successes in road races. In 2009 she was again European champion in the individual time trial . At the UCI track world championships in Manchester in 2008 , Ellen van Dijk was world champion in scratch.
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Ellen van Dijk started in the road race (not placed), in the individual time trial (8th) and in the team pursuit on the track, where the Dutch team ( Vera Koedooder , Amy Pieters , Kirsten Wild ) finished sixth. At the end of the season, van Dijk and her team from HTC Highroad Women ( Charlotte Becker , Amber Neben , Evelyn Stevens , Ina-Yoko Teutenberg and Trixi Worrack ) became world champion in the team time trial .
In 2013 she came second in the Tour of Flanders, won the Gracia Orlová stage races and the Energiewacht Tour in April , became the Dutch champion in the individual time trial for the third time and won the individual time trial on the 8th stage of the Giro d'Italia Femminile . As the season progressed, she also won the overall ranking of the Boels Ladies Tour and a few days later, as in the previous year, the Lotto Belgium Tour . At the end of the season she then triumphed at the world championships with her team ( Lisa Brennauer , Katie Colclough , Carmen Small , Evelyn Stevens and Trixi Worrack) in the team time trial as in 2012 and then became world champion in the individual time trial.
In 2014, the Tour of Flanders won with a 25-kilometer solo attack . She was also runner-up in the time trial at the national championships, less than a second behind Annemiek van Vleuten , and she also won the opening time trial of the Boels Ladies Tour .
In 2015, she finished seventh in the individual time trial at the World Championships after suffering mechanical problems and a broken collarbone seven weeks earlier. In addition, she won the gold medal in the individual time trial at the 2015 European Games and was fourth in the road race, at the Dutch championships she was second again in the time trial.
A year later, she won the team and individual time trial as well as the overall classification at the 2016 Energy Watch Tour . At the games in Rio de Janeiro she missed the medal ranks by eleven seconds due to a driving error in the time trial and finished fourth, in the road race she finished 21st. A few weeks later she became the first European champion in the individual time trial in Brittany . She also won silver at the World Championships in Doha , six seconds behind the winner.
For the 2017 season she moved to the Dutch team Sunweb . At the Healthy Aging Tour she won the opening time trial and, like in 2013 and 2016, was able to win the overall standings, and she was once again European champion in the individual time trial, with almost a minute ahead of Belgian Ann-Sophie Duyck . In September of that year, she and her team won the team time trial at the World Championships in Bergen, Norway, and thus became world champion in this competition for the fourth time.
In 2018 she won Dwars door Vlaanderen after an attack six kilometers from the finish from a 7-man escape group . In addition, with six seconds ahead of Anna van der Breggen, she was the fourth time Dutch champion in the individual time trial. In the same year in Glasgow, two seconds ahead of van der Breggen , she won the title of European Champion in the individual time trial for the third time in a row , won the overall ranking of the La Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta and won bronze at the world championships in the team and individual time trials.
In August 2019, Ellen van Dijk became European champion in the individual time trial for the fourth time in a row . In September she fell on the fourth stage of the Boels Ladies Tour , broke her pelvis and an upper arm and was therefore out for the rest of the season.
