UEC European Road Championships 2020

The UEC -Roads European Championships 2020 ( 2020 UEC European Championships Road ) were from 24 to 28 August at the French Plouay in the Bretagne discharged.

The European road championships ended one day before the start of the Tour de France . On Tuesday, August 25th, the UCI races Grand Prix de Plouay-Bretagne for women and Bretagne Classic - Ouest-France for men were held between the first two days of racing .

A total of 13 titles were awarded at the European Championships, six in the road race, six in the time trial and one in the mixed relay .

The European Championships were originally planned for September 9th to 13th, 2020 in the Italian city ​​of Trento . In May 2020 the UEC announced that the European Championships for 2020 will be canceled and postponed to the same venue after 2021. The dates are 1 to 5 or 8 to 12 September 2021 under discussion.

The time trial route is the same for all categories and consists of a 25.6-kilometer circuit. It consists of uphill and downhill sections. The Restergal is on the last kilometers (1500 meters high with 4.2 percent).

The circuit for the road race is 13.65 kilometers long. It comprises three ascents: the Côte du Lézot (1,400 meters with 3.9 percent), the ascent of the Lann Payot (1,300 meters with 2.6 percent) and the Côte de Restergal . The racetrack roughly corresponds to that of the UCI Road World Championships in 2000 .

95 riders started, 51 of which reached the finish. The German drivers Lisa Klein , Mieke Kröger , Kathrin Hammes , Romy Kasper , Charlotte Becker and Trixi Worrack , the Austrians Kathrin Schweinberger and Angelika Tazreiter and the Swiss Kathrin Stirnemann gave up the race.

The teams from the Netherlands and Italy dominated the race from the start. In the final laps, a group of ten women stayed in the lead. 40 kilometers from the finish, Annemiek van Vleuten, Elisa Longo Borghini and Katarzyna Niewiadoma left this group, followed by Chantal Blaak. Several attempts to break away followed, and in the end Longo Borghini was successful two kilometers from the finish, but was caught by van Vleuten. Annemiek van Vleuten won the race in the finish sprint.

153 riders started, 53 of whom gave up the race, including the Germans Michael Schwarzmann , Rüdiger Selig and Andreas Schillinger after falling as well as Justin Wolf , the Austrian Patrick Gamper and the Swiss Reto Hollenstein .

Four drivers led the race over 100 kilometers, Andreas Miltiades from Cyprus , Dusan Rajovic from Serbia , Pawel Bernas from Poland and Emil Dima from Romania . Then the peloton reunited. Further attacks by Belgian and Dutch drivers as well as two kilometers from the finish by British Thomas Pidcock and Portuguese Ruben Guerreiro were successfully ended by the Italian team. After these two riders had been caught, the Italians Davide Ballerini and Davide Cimolai prepared the sprint for Giacomo Nizzolo, who was declared the winner in front of Arnaud Démare after the photo finish . The German Pascal Ackermann took third place after his helpers had to retire after falling.
