Nico Denz (born February 15, 1994 in Waldshut-Tiengen ) is a German racing cyclist .
Career
After Denz started cycling at VBC Waldshut-Tiengen , he joined the French club team Chambéry Cyclisme Formation , the farm team of the UCI World Team AG2R La Mondiale, in 2013 . In the 2014 season, Denz won seven races on the French cycling calendar, making him the most successful rider on this cycling team .
From August 1, 2014, he drove for the World Team as a stagiaire . He then signed a regular contract with effect from August 1, 2015, as he agreed with management that a change at the beginning of 2015 would be too early. Before his move, Denz achieved his first points in the ranking of the UCI Europe Tour with third place in the Bern Tour and seventh place in the overall ranking of the Tour des Pays de Savoie and took third place in the U23 and U23 road races at the German road championships eleventh place in the elite.
In the 2017 season, Denz won the mountain classification of the Étoile de Bessèges . At the UCI WorldTour race Eschborn – Frankfurt , he and Nils Politt initiated a breakaway attempt 40 kilometers from the finish and finally came in 31st. On his Grand Tour debut, the Vuelta a España 2017 , Denz and his teammate Alexandre Geniez were out of the race taken after they both clung to a support car on the 15th stage on the final climb.
On the tenth stage of the Giro d'Italia 2018 he was able to pull away in the final with Matej Mohorič , behind whom he finished second in the final sprint and thus achieved his best result in a WorldTour race to date. At the European Championships in 2018 , Denz was a member of a 10-man top group 10 kilometers from the finish, but fell and came in ninth. In the same year he achieved his first professional victory at the Tour de Vendée in a sprint of a three-man breakaway group.
