Nils Politt (born March 6, 1994 in Cologne ) is a German racing cyclist . In 2021, Politt won the 12th stage of the Tour de France and the overall ranking of the Deutschland Tour .

Athletic career

Politt first started for the RV Komet-Delia 09 Köln eV In 2011 he became German champion in the junior team pursuit , together with Stefan Schneider, Nils Schomber and Ruben Zepuntke . In the two-man team race, he finished second with Stefan Schneider. In 2012 he was German runner-up (U19) in the individual time trial , second in Cologne-Schuld-Frechen and, together with Nils Schomber, German junior champion in two-man team driving.

In the 2013 season, Politt was active for the Continental Team Stölting and became German runner-up in the individual time trial (U23) . The following year he won the title in this discipline . In 2015 he was again runner-up in the U23 time trial and won the German U23 road championship after a solo escape. At the end of the season he drove for the UCI WorldTeam Katusha as a stagiaire and received a regular contract for 2016. In his first races for this team, he finished fifth after a solo escape in the one-day race Le Samyn . In the same year he placed third and ninth in the overall rankings of the stage races Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen and Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde .

In 2017, Politt competed in the Tour de France for the first time and attracted attention as a member of a breakaway group during the third stage . He finished the tour in 98th place.

In 2018 he finished 17th in the Tour of Flanders as the best German. A week later, he finished Paris-Roubaix in seventh place, also as the best German. On the fourth stage of the Deutschland Tour 2018 , Politt won the sprint of a top group of 15 and thus his first international elite race. In the overall ranking of the tour, he came in second.

After Politt finished sixth in the E3 BinckBank Classic and fifth in the Tour of Flanders at the beginning of the 2019 season , he finished second in the two-man sprint at Paris-Roubaix behind Philippe Gilbert , who was the only one of a small leading group to follow Politt's attack 14 kilometers from the finish .

In his third participation in the Tour de France in 2019, Politt set a speed record within this Tour edition during the 18th stage with 101.5 km / h on the descent from the Col de Vars . In the same year he won the silver medal at the world championships with the mixed relay . In January 2020 he won the Bremen six-day race together with the Belgian Kenny De Ketele .

Politt achieved his greatest career success to date with victory on stage 12 of the Tour de France 2021 , after he was able to break away from his last two companions of an early breakaway group with 12 kilometers to go. The following August he won the overall ranking and a stage of the Deutschland Tour .

Honors

In 2011 Nils Politt was honored as “Junior Sportsman of the Year” in his hometown of Hürth , and in 2014 as “Sportsman of the Year”.
