Mixed relay (cycling)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mixed relay (officially Engl .: team time trial mixed relay , dt. TTT-mixed relay ) is a discipline of road cycling , in which a team time trial of the men is combined with one of the women.

mode

The mixed relay consists of three men and three women from the national team, from the elite and U23 categories. First, three men start and after the second man has passed, they are replaced by three women who cover the second half of the distance. The time measurement takes place after the second athlete at the finish. Outside of the UCI road world championships , the regulations can stipulate a number of drivers from two to six per gender.

history

From 1962 to 1994, the team time trial for four-man national teams was held at road world championships. This tradition was resumed from 2012 as a competition with six riders for commercial cycling teams . The competition met with criticism from many teams, mainly because of the high costs involved. In 2017, the president of the UCI World Cycling Federation , David Lappartient , announced that the competition would be abolished in 2020. This decision was regretted by drivers and smaller teams.

As part of the UCI Road World Championships 2018 in Innsbruck , the UCI World Cycling Association announced that the team time trial would be held there for the last time and that the new time trial competition would be introduced. The new format makes it possible for the national associations to form teams from the time trial specialists . Organizers could use the routes that are already planned for the individual time trials and road races . In addition, this competition is a step towards more equality in cycling.

The abolition of the team time trial and the introduction of the new competition also met with criticism. This is what Matthew White , the sporting director of Mitchelton-Scott , called this a "Mickey Mouse Event". The team manager of Quick-Step floors , Patrick Lefevere , described its introduction as "ridiculous".

The mixed relay was held for the first time in 2019 at the Road World Championships in Yorkshire . The competition at European level had already premiered at the European Road Championships in Alkmaar .
