Route: the blue loop ("Olympiarunde") was used for all races, the green loop ("Höttinger Höll") was also used once by the elite men.

The 85th UCI Road World Championships were from 22 to 30 September 2018 in the Austrian Innsbruck instead. It was the third road world championships after 1987 in Villach and 2006 in Salzburg that were held in Austria.

The world championships were made up of a total of twelve competitions, a road race , a team time trial and an individual time trial for men and women as well as a road race and an individual time trial for U23 drivers and juniors. The organizers of the Tour de Suisse were responsible for the operational implementation of the races . The competitions were very demanding: the men's 265-kilometer road race led over nine climbs with an altitude difference of around 5000 meters.

More than 1000 athletes took part. Mojtaba Majizadeh, who started in the junior road race, was the first time a driver from Afghanistan took part in a road world championship .

world champion was Anna van der Breggen , who closed up to the leading group around 42 kilometers from the finish after time trial world champion Annemiek van Vleuten had stepped up their pace and shortly afterwards distanced her only companion, Amanda Spratt , who remained from the former top group .

There were 149 riders from 48 nations at the start, of which 68 did not reach the finish. The race ended prematurely. a. Lisa Brennauer , Trixi Worrack , Charlotte Becker , Kathrin Hammes and Christa Riffel from Germany ; Nicole Hanselmann from Switzerland ; Martina Ritter from Austria .
